Hello MAB Community,
This month we are introducing the second of our four themes (https://mab23.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8cfdd88c1ac384d3d832dc09b&id=0f77f19ac4&e=f396b40b5a) for MAB23: (Dis)engagement. We also have a profile of MAB23 Advisory Board member Niels Wouters (https://mab23.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8cfdd88c1ac384d3d832dc09b&id=737c0ca07a&e=f396b40b5a) and a feature on our Student Award Chairs who are working hard at developing a call for student projects. Look out for that later this year.
Read more below and be sure to send us your events and opportunities at info at mab23.org (mailto:info at mab23.org) and we’ll help publicize them here and on our social media channels.

In 2017, Google tried but failed to convince Toronto of its plan to make urban living more “efficient” and “enjoyable” through a suite of interconnected embedded urban sensors, platforms, protocols, and displays.
This prompts us to ask: how is media architecture situated and mobilized within the proliferation of “smart city” plans and platforms of data representation and capture? How and why is it being resisted, reworked, or rejected in theory or in practice? What can we learn from lingering on media architectural “failure” as a countermovement to the drive towards urban expedience and endless growth? On the other hand, what roles might media architecture play in addressing issues of safety, trust, and consent within urban interaction design and digitally mediated urbanism?
Some areas that this theme might explore include:
* Surveillance
* AI, Machine Learning, and Public Space
* Audience/gaze/attention tracking (computer vision, machine learning, analysis)
* Public health and public safety
* Censorship and freedom of expression
* De-globalization and de-growth
* Data extractivism
* Data governance
* Anticipatory governance
* Ownership/stewardship
* Blockchain and digital ledger technologies
* The right to disconnect
* Resisting or rejecting media architecture (ie. digital culture jamming, guerilla projection)
* Civic technology procurement policies and practices

MAB PROFILES
Niels Wouters is a Design Researcher based in Melbourne, Australia. With experience in user research, digital strategy, placemaking and design, Niels has worked with councils, community organizations, tertiary education providers, and cultural venues across Australia and Europe to implement innovative technologies that create meaningful places.
Niels is passionate about human-centred technology innovation and advocates for technologies in public space to be driven by participatory and inclusive agendas. He is a frequent media commentator and public speaker on the societal risks and opportunities of emerging technologies.
As in Australia, Canada is characterized by Indigenous identity and knowledge. I hope to learn from other practitioners and researchers, in Canada and other nations, about how media architecture may become a platform for more holistic engagement with Indigenous practices and knowledge.
“I studied the social qualities of media architecture during my Ph.D. and subsequently contributed to a number of media facades in and around Melbourne, Australia. There are so many angles to media architecture that continue to fascinate me: it's capacity to stimulate and showcase technological innovation, its qualities to reinvigorate the urban fabric, and its ongoing opportunities to kickstart important research on interactivity, participation, and community engagement.”

MAB FEATURES
The MAB Student Awards will showcase bold and exciting projects, concepts, and prototypes created by students from around the world. The awards are an opportunity for students to leverage their professional profile and exhibit their work to the international audience of the MAB23 community.
For this version of the student awards, we plan to showcase all nominees in an exhibition and offer student attendees access to an exclusive networking session where they can present their work to organizations interested in new talents.
"We encourage all students to submit their ideas and projects: the spotlight is reserved for you!”
- Juan Carvajal B.
This year’s Student Award Chairs, Juan Carlos Carvajal Bermúdez, Jeanette Cosentini, Michelle Ng, and Ava Pouralborz, are hard at work developing this year’s call for student projects. Start thinking about your project submissions now! The call will go out later this year.
