JAIS Theory Development Workshop
In Association with ICIS 2022
Wednesday, Dec 14, 2022 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Evening Reception Following

Since December 2002, the Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS) has held annual Theory Development Workshops. This year we will hold the 20th JAIS Theory Development Workshop in conjunction with ICIS in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The in-person workshop is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, December 14, from 14:00 to 17:00 (2pm - 5pm). There will be a JAIS reception immediately following.

Workshop Information and Format

This year the Theory Development Workshop will provide a completely new and novel experience. Structured somewhat like the TV series Shark Tank, authors who have published a theory paper in a major conference can compete to have their work selected by a mentor to be further refined for publication in JAIS as a JAIS Promise submission, following the workshop. Authors will have 15 minutes to present their theory and 10 to receive feedback from the panel comprised of JAIS Senior Editor mentors and senior scholar guest editors. The panel judges are Robert Gregory, Varun Grover, Dorothy Leidner, and Youngjin Yoo. A limited number of theory papers will be chosen for the workshop to be presented to a panel of senior editor mentors. The ultimate number of papers selected will be decided based on the quantity and quality of entries. During the workshop, individuals who are not presenting are welcome to attend as audience participants. Audience participants will be able to vote on various awards and also provide feedback to authors in an online chat that will run throughout the event. Awards will be given to authors for audience favorite and panel favorite.

FAQs

What is meant by a theory paper?

  * We specifically focus on non-empirical pure theory, such as:

What is meant by a major conference?

  * Any completed research paper or research-in-progress paper published in the proceedings of a major IS related conference, such as ICIS (current or past), HICSS, ECIS, AMCIS, PACIS, AOM, etc. Papers already published in a journal are not eligible; only conference papers may be entered.

What will the feedback be like?

  * The feedback will include suggestions by the panel on how to improve the paper prior to journal submission, questions about the theory, suggestions for literature streams to consider in further building the theory, and recommendations on what journal the panels recommend the authors consider for submission.
  * What they would expect to see if they were an SE of a JAIS submission based on the conference paper.
  * Each mentor may volunteer to handle a paper as a JAIS Promise submission. In this case, the SE is committing to work with the author towards eventual publication of the paper.

Do you have to have a paper to attend?

  * No. All ICIS attendees are welcome to attend as audience participants.

What will non-presenting attendees do?

  * Non-presenting attendees will be audience participants. They will be able to provide their feedback to authors via an online chat and will be allowed to vote on their favorite theory. They will also be invited to attend the reception.
