----

Northumbria Social Computing (NorSC) at Northumbria University in Newcastle
upon Tyne, UK invites applications for a three-year fully funded PhD
position in designing technology for better urban wildlife interactions.
Application deadline is January 27th with the position estimated to start
October '23. The workplace is Northumbria University's main city campus in
Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

== About the project ==
Are you interested in making the world a better place for human and animal
alike? Want to use your skills to work on a trans-disciplinary challenge
designing technology that will support and guide urban wildlife
interactions to the benefit of people, animals, and society, all grounded
in the EU’s “One Health” concept? This PhD might be the fit for you.

Your PhD project will be situated in an ongoing strand of (more than)
thuman digital design research at Northumbria University on urban
human-wildlife interactions across the UK establishing a critical
anthrozoologically-informed exploration of the role that technology ought
to play in establishing more-than-human cities. You will be expected to
work on the design and prototyping of platforms for human and urban
wildlife co-existence in a way to promote both human mental & physical
health on the one hand, and increasing understanding and tolerance of the
role of the non-human in the city on the other hand. We have existing
datasets setting out detailed positive and negative urban wildlife
encounters, and ongoing collaborations with anthrozoologists and computer
scientists with which you will be able to collaborate.

If you want to chat about this project and your ideas for it, discuss
whether it’s right for you, and what doing a PhD (at Northumbria) is like,
get in touch with Dirk (dirk.vanderlinden at northumbria.ac.uk).

== The candidate's profile ==

background in computer science, information systems, human geography,
anthropology, or animal science, with a keen interest in the role of
technology in human-animal relationships.
