Post Doc in Open Science, Scientific Computing and Innovation
Scientific and computational breakthroughs such as AlphaFold, mRNA or CRISPR are promising to impact innovation processes and transform society. To better understand these impacts, the ESADE Institute for Innovation and Knowledge Management is searching for a Postdoctoral Researcher interested in Open Science and Information/Computational Technologies. In recent years, scientific processes in many disciplines have been affected by increasing reliance on massive data storage, analysis, and computational methods. This has not only affected the underlying economics of scientific processes, but also the relationship within scientific research communities, the public, and businesses that rely upon scientific advances for product development. We seek a post-doctoral researcher with a keen interest in the evolving relationships between ICT (Information and Computational Technologies), scientific processes & communities, innovation, and business.
The postdoctoral position will be funded the Horizon Europe/Horizon 2020 projects ATTRACThttps://attract-eu.com<https://attract-eu.com/>
ATTRACT (https://attract-eu.com) coordinated by CERN, awards seed and development funding to entrepreneurs to develop commercially viable proof-of-concepts based on the sophisticated instrumentation, detection, and computational technologies developed for Europe’s leading scientific research infrastructures. In total, ATTRACT has been awarded 60 million euro to support selected projects to become functional start-ups in deep tech, life science, energy, manufacturing, or environmental industries, amongst others.
The successful candidate will study the emerging innovation practices in the funded projects under ATTRACT, the partner scientific infrastructures and/or similar initiatives. The candidate will focus on using qualitative methods to meaningfully characterize the transformation in the conduct of science enabled by these novel computational advances and digital infrastructures. Activities may include but are not limited to interviewing scientists and managers about their practice, observing researchers in how they use various computational technologies, collecting archival data to track scientific trends and applying various analysis strategies to make sense of these data sources.
The most important qualification is that candidates should be passionate about science and how changes in scientific practices are affecting businesses and society in general. We are looking for a candidate with excellent oral and written communication skills in English. A background in a related scientific discipline such as genetics, bioinformatics, biology, chemistry, or physics is a plus. The candidate would ideally be entrepreneurial, self-motivated and collaborative. The ideal candidate will have recently completed their PhD and seek to establish a publication record in leading journals in the fields of management, information systems, and scientific policy.
Responsibilities will include:

  1. Data analysis
  2. Preparation of the deliverables and reports for the funded projects
  3. Co-authorship of academic articles based on research activities
  4. Preparations of competitive funding proposals in future funding calls
The position represents a unique opportunity for the right candidate to work with Europe´s leading scientific research infrastructures to understand the rapidly evolving environment that science now operates in, how its practices are changing, how this influences the business logic of industries and its relationship to society in general.
The job position is based in ESADE (Sant Cugat Campus). This is a full‐time position for 2 years, starting in May 2023 (negotiable).
