Workshop: Design, Applications, and User Experience of Intelligent Systems in the Workplace
HCI International 2023: Copenhagen, Denmark
Date & Time: Monday, 24 July 2023, 13:30-17:30
Details: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://2023.hci.international/W4.html__;!!PTd7Sdtyuw!XYNK0fXRvk4cmo_8aW2BjnGBxGadztIGKTashOShtc6OOrNeu8XUq3ShcyxdXIXxh5Jra8aDcZd5gPFvK5fpaIqVq1SqCJQXwQ$<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/2023.hci.international/W4.html__;!!PTd7Sdtyuw!XYNK0fXRvk4cmo_8aW2BjnGBxGadztIGKTashOShtc6OOrNeu8XUq3ShcyxdXIXxh5Jra8aDcZd5gPFvK5fpaIqVq1SqCJQXwQ$>
Aim of the workshop
Intelligent agents are the answer to many inefficiencies and hiring-related difficulties in today's business world. However, not every intelligent agent is designed and implemented similarly. Different task-related and environmental characteristics lead to different levels of intelligent agent autonomy in planning and the execution of complex decision-making scenarios. There are different ways of designing the most efficient intelligent agent at each autonomy and task complexity level.
In this workshop, we aim to set the stage and provide a forum for participants to discuss the factors affecting user experience design implementations to optimize human-machine team interaction and workplace performance.
Expected workshop outcome
The workshop has three aims:
1. To facilitate knowledge sharing of the discrete challenges that authors will be presenting in relation to the design, application, and user experience of intelligent systems in the workplace.
2. Participating authors will have the option of publishing their contribution in conference proceedings published by Springer as part of the CCIS series.
3. A collective discussion and co-creation of a position paper in relation to the presented challenges will commence during the workshop and will be completed following the conclusion of the workshop; the manuscript to be produced will be submitted to the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction (IJHCI) for publication consideration.
Workshop topics
A non-exhaustive list of potential discussion topics includes:
*Designing socially-embedded intelligent agents in workplaces
*Human-AI interactions and ?teaming? in organizational settings
*Potential problems of automation / autonomous solutions in the workplace
*User considerations, engagement models, and meta decisions in human-AI interactions
*Challenges and opportunities when deploying intelligent systems in real-life contexts of use, including governance
*Ethical and societal issues regarding the use of intelligent agents in complex decision-making scenarios
*Usability problems and user experience considerations for interactions with intelligent agents and systems in group and organizational settings
*Case studies regarding the application of intelligent systems in organizations.
Guidelines to prospective authors
Prospective presenters are invited to submit either a complete manuscript or an extended 800-word abstract through the HCII Conference Management System (CMS). Submissions will undergo a double-blind review to ensure rigor and diversity.
Submission for the Conference Proceedings
Authors of accepted workshop proposals that are registered for the conference, are welcome to submit through the HCII Conference Management System (CMS), an extended version of their workshop contribution, to be considered for presentation at the Conference and inclusion in the ?Late Breaking Work? conference proceedings in the CCIS as a short paper (typically 6 pages, but no less than 4 and no more than 8), following peer review.
The submission deadline for the camera-ready papers (long or short) for the ?Late Breaking Work? Volumes of the Proceedings is the 15th of June 2023.
Important Dates
7 April 2023: Submissions of workshop proposals
21 April 2023: Notification about submission acceptance
30 April 2023: Finalization of workshop organization and registration of participants
Workshop Co-Chairs
*Constantinos K. Coursaris, Ph.D., HEC Montreal

Dear colleagues,
We would like to invite you to send a submission to our special issue in the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems. Apologies for cross-posting.
The Dark Side of IS: Role of the IT Artefact<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://communities.aisnet.org/scandinavia/sjis/cfp-special-issue__;!!PTd7Sdtyuw!XYNK0fXRvk4cmo_8aW2BjnGBxGadztIGKTashOShtc6OOrNeu8XUq3ShcyxdXIXxh5Jra8aDcZd5gPFvK5fpaIqVq1RObf27Cg$<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/communities.aisnet.org/scandinavia/sjis/cfp-special-issue__;!!PTd7Sdtyuw!XYNK0fXRvk4cmo_8aW2BjnGBxGadztIGKTashOShtc6OOrNeu8XUq3ShcyxdXIXxh5Jra8aDcZd5gPFvK5fpaIqVq1RObf27Cg$> >
* Submissions Due: October 15th 2023
* Round 1 Decisions: December 15th 2023
* Revisions Due: March 15th 2024
* Round 2 Decisions: May 1st 2024
* Second Revisions (if needed): June 20th 2024
* Anticipated Publication Date: December 31st 2024
The focus of the special issue will be on theorising the IT artefact in problematic technology use, and how individuals, organisations, and society can prevent and respond to undesirable technology behaviour. The IT artefact is a core part of the information systems discipline. However, conceptualisations of materiality in existing studies on dark side phenomena are often unclear. Topics of relevance to this special issue include, but are not limited, to:
* Theoretical frameworks, conceptual models, and ethical considerations (e.g., social justice) that provide new understandings of the IT artefact in dark side phenomena.
* Innovative methodologies for investigating problematic technology use and the influence of IT artefacts on users, organisations, and society as a whole.
* Research contributing to an improved understanding on the design and IT-related characteristics that trigger or contribute to negative effects or alternatively help resolve the key issues. For example, are dark-sided phenomena already existent when an IT artefact is introduced, or is it produced/reproduced by an IT artefact?
* Design principles explaining why users, organisations, and society engage in problematic behaviours within voluntary and involuntary IT use contexts.
* Research on the dark side of emerging technologies such as AI (e.g., ChatGPT), the metaverse, digital twins, augmented reality, and deep fakes.
* Unintended consequences of IT artefacts such as deception and malicious use, new forms of technostress (e.g. in the metaverse), technology-mediated addiction, cyberbullying, monitoring/surveillance and privacy issues.
* IT artefact design features and policy agendas for data justice and mitigating problematic technology use (e.g., digital locks, control mechanisms, digital nudging and sludging).
* Context-specific (e.g., cultural, geographical, industry, educational settings) studies that provide new understandings of the IT artefact in dark side phenomena.
We are looking forward to receiving your submissions. For any questions, please email stephen.mccarthy at ucc.ie<mailto:stephen.mccarthy at ucc.ie<mailto:stephen.mccarthy at ucc.ie%3cmailto:stephen.mccarthy at ucc.ie>>.

The Internet of Things (IoT) vision is to provide a dynamic and global
network infrastructure which is characterized by intelligent and self
configuring capabilities. IoT is considered as an integral part of the
future Internet. It is based on interoperable communication protocols in
order to enable the interaction and integration of virtual as well as
physical Things such as computers, smart devices, sensors, cars,
refrigerators, food packages, medicines, etc. Things can be seamlessly
integrated into the information network and interaction can be made through
the provision of intelligent interfaces. In not so distant future, IoT will
be forcing its way into every aspect of our lives and technologies
including smart homes, smart cities, environment and nature, green energy,
food, medicine, automotive, aerospace and aviation, telecommunication, and
so on.
IoT is generally characterized by real world and small Things, limited
capacity, constrained devices and the consequential issues such as less
reliability, security and privacy. Cloud computing on the other hand deals
mainly with virtual world and has unlimited capabilities in terms of
storage and processing power. Thus cloud and IoT are the main complementary
aspects of the future Internet. IoT can benefit from the unlimited
capabilities and resources of cloud computing. Similarly, cloud can benefit
from IoT by extending its scope to deal with real world things in a more
distributed and dynamic manner.
The theme of this conference is to promote the state of the art in
scientific and practical research of the IoT and cloud computing. It
provides a forum for bringing together researchers and practitioners from
academia, industry, and public sector in an effort to present their
research work and share research and development ideas in the area of IoT

The development of the Internet, social media, distributed databases, and a variety of mobile devices has caused a huge increase in data. Much of this diverse data in unstructured and structured forms has a high business value and, if properly utilized, can become an important organizational asset. It contains various information about customers, transactions at superstores and on the Internet, competition, labor market, and development trends for industries, products and services, social media such as Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook, as well as the public and political mood. Moreover, this data comes in real-time and needs to be processed instantly using data streaming technology. For innovative, collaborative and sustainable development, it is essential for organizations to utilize this data to increase sales, identify future opportunities and new markets, outperform the competition, enhance products and services, recruit talent, improve operations, perform forecasting, protect the brand, and identify areas for improvement to name a few. Journal of Systems Architecture
Special Issue on
Distributed Learning and Blockchain Enabled
Infrastructures
for Next Generation of Big Data Driven Cyber-Physical
Systems
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aims and Scope
Modern Cyber-Physical System (CPS) is composed by integrating and
networking the physical world, computational components, and
Internet-of-Things(IoT)
devices such as sensors, actuators, etc. Typical CPS applications include
autonomous driving systems, smart home, robotics systems, smart healthcare
systems,
etc. With the prevalence of CPSs, the huge volume of ever-increasing data
produced by heterogeneous IoT devices raise crucial challenges in both
system
architectures and data management. First, traditional centralized CPSs have
the shortcomings of destitute transparency and scalability, making it
difficult
to scale with the ever-increasing volume of data generated across CPSs.
Moreover, CPSs are often associated with sensitive data, while their
centralized
infrastructures expose them to vulnerability, data breaches, and denial of
services.
Therefore, the decentralized CPS infrastructure becomes a potential
solution, in particular, it is essential to explore new big data processing
techniques
with decentralized CPS infrastructures.
Distributed learning and blockchain techniques, envisioned as the bedrock
of future intelligent networks and IoT technologies, have attracted
tremendous
attentions from both academy and industry due to the nature of
decentralization, data security, and privacy benefits. The decentralized
architectures,
together with the ability to enable secured, trusted and decentralized
autonomous ecosystems, revolutionize increasingly centralized CPSs for
infrastructures
and applications, as well as reshaping of traditional data mining and
knowledge discovery patterns. However, adopting distributed learning and
blockchain
technologies in big data driven CPS applications requires essential
insights with respect to concrete application domains, scalability, privacy
issues,
performance, and financial benefits as well.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
? Data and transaction management on blockchain in CPSs
? Distributed data analytics in blockchain enabled CPSs
? Data mining and knowledge discovery over distributed learning in CPSs
? Novel distributed learning models with strict resource constraints in CPSs
? Distributed learning for emerging applications in CPSs
? Data security, privacy and trust on distributed learning and blockchain
in CPSs
? Distributed learning and blockchain in cloud/edge/fog computing for CPSs
? Distributed learning and blockchain based lightweight data structure for
CPS data
? Big data algorithms, tools and services using distributed learning and
blockchain technologies in CPSs
? Performance optimization and energy efficiency for distributed learning
and blockchain enabled big data applications in CPSs

Theme
Transportation is changing, and this change is driven by technology-driven trends: autonomy, connectivity, electrification, and diverse mobility business models of shared vehicles. At the same time, there is a drive towards more sustainable transportation. Digital platforms and services are essential for orchestrating smart and sustainable mobility ecosystems and related services: data that accurately represents, for instance, the location of passengers and service providers, weather, usage, and maintenance is a cornerstone for service design. Identification and communication systems that link specific physical things to specific digital addresses offer possibilities to communicate, transact, pay, build trust, sense and activate ?things? from the internet ? and design novel services based on this generated data. Autonomous vehicles, electric cars, and mobility-related sharing economy services build on platform thinking, as do many services reducing the need for travel. Furthermore, for these services to work, there is a need to analyze the ecosystems emerging around these services, as the benefits and platforms form complex webs.
Autonomous vehicles have been hailed as harbingers of new kinds of mobility and travel services. Autonomous cars seem to be further away from wider prevalence than expected a couple of years ago, but the data gathered for them and made available from, e.g. smart city initiatives and mobile devices provide great opportunities for different kinds of smart mobility services related to both private and public transportation. Also, shipping industry, especially in cargo shipping, has already many ongoing advanced projects and pilots, and in aviation, autonomous aircraft are being developed by several companies. In closed and hazardous environments, such as mines, autonomous vehicles are already working. Autonomous vehicles on land, in see, and air (including drones) are expected to decrease costs and increase efficiency and safety, but a host of regulatory, safety, legal, and security challenges are yet to be resolved.
More acutely, electric cars are increasingly embraced by car owners, and they require their own set of infrastructure and services. Full-scale charging infrastructure needs building, and it involves a lot of mobile services to support it. Some are simple, like applications that show the location and availability of charging stations, and some more complex, like payment systems for charging and - in the near future - for trading electricity stored in car batteries, which can be used in smart grids to balance peaks of consumption. Societal benefits of moving from fossil fuels to electricity in terms of reduction of pollution are pretty evident, but in addition to insufficient charging infrastructure, limited driving range, high costs and battery issues still act as barriers to wider acceptance.
At the same time, there is growing concerns about the sustainability of current practices of mobility and travel. Mobility-related sharing economy services as well as different types of fleet services, are seen as viable options for privately owned cars. Still, they have their own challenges, such as added congestion in cities, reconfiguring existing modes of (especially public) transportation, disrupting incumbent industries, and widening the power imbalance between the platform owners and ?independent contractors.? These services require the ability to connect to these specific platforms and seem to be prone to solid location and availability-based network effects. Examples of these services are on one hand, Uber and Lyft type of services and, on the other hand, in the near future, autonomous transportation of people and cargo through fleets of autonomous vehicles on land, water and air.
At the same time concerns about business travel have become acute in many countries, and there are movements to limit work and leisure travel when possible. Could smart digital services and apps offer alternatives for travel, or could some services propose the best ways to limit the carbon footprint of travel?
In addition to using mobility value services, we are also interested in their development, design and service innovation. Furthermore, social, societal, and potential customer segmentation issues are of great interest. In this proposed minitrack, we take stock of what is the state of the art in current mobility services and service ecosystems and what is coming shortly.
As HICSS is addressing leading edge developments, we especially encourage submissions on new subareas, such as sustainable travel services, autonomous transportation services, and privacy and security concepts.
Relevant topics for this minitrack include (but are not limited to):
? Transportation ecosystems and services
? Smart traffic services
? Autonomous and connected vehicle development
? Autonomous vehicle (land, sea, air) business models
? User issues in different smart traffic services
? Location-based services and business models related to mobility
? The business value of transportation and mobility services
? Data privacy and quality in mobility services
? Data sharing and ownership issues hampering data utilization in mobility services
? Sustainable travel services
? Value added services for travelers (usage, location, maintenance data)
? Business and societal issues related to autonomous vehicles (land, sea, air)
? Technological challenges of adaptivity of services
