 ****OVERVIEW :

Writingpapers for high-quality journals in the social and behavioral sciences is bothan art and a science, and this workshop will delve into both the art and thescience. A discussion of theory and theory development will be situated withinthe elements of an empirical journal article - including identifying ascientific gap and writing a good article. A broader emphasis of the workshopwill be to situate theory within a research program and paradigms of research.

****OBJECTIVES :

Tolearn to write an empirical journal article and especially the front-end(introduction, literature review and theory sections) for leading social andbehavioral sciences journals. This is accomplished using three intertwinedgoals:

1.To learn how to develop the motivation for research and by association, apaper.

2.To build theory development skills and recognize the challenges in developinggood theory.

3.To situate the knowledge gained about theory and writing within broad thecontext of developing an effective research program.

4. To learn how to structure and write varioussections of an empirical journal article.

****STRUCTURE :

Thethree-day workshop will be structured to be intensive and a combination oflecture and discussion. To get maximal value, participants are encouraged toread articles [to be assigned after registration] prior to the workshop.Additionally, we will work through specific exercises aimed to helpparticipants develop a specific paper. Through this process, it is the hopethat the participants will leave with a significant understanding of how towrite better papers, especially from the perspective of crafting a better storyand developing better theory.
