Applications are invited for an appointment as Professor in Data
Management, Full-Time, Permanent in the College of Science and
Engineering at University of Galway.
Linked to our strategic research priority area of Realising potential
through data and enabling technologies, the University of Galway
invites applications for a Professorship in our Data Science Institute
(DSI) in the College of Science and Engineering.
Data Science, including data analytics, is a thematic priority
research area for the College of Science and Engineering. Through the
DSI and our schools (especially the schools of Computer Science;
Engineering; and Mathematical and Statistical Sciences), as well as
other Research Institutes and centres, the University of Galway
currently holds a strong international reputation in specific research
areas of Data Science and Data Analytics and in translating this
research into strong teaching programmes. The recruitment of a
Professor in Data Management is a strategic opportunity to further
expand significantly this capability and expertise, open it up to new
and emerging areas, and lead the continued growth of this research
priority area in the University.
The Professorship is a senior academic position of key strategic
importance. Specifically, the successful appointee will provide
strategic research leadership to the DSI in the field of data
management.
The successful appointees are expected to enrich the University of
Galway’s track record in the field of data management by:
• leading internationally-recognised research and innovation
• developing strategic partnerships with industry and international
research centres of esteem
• attracting high-quality students and early career researchers to the
University of Galway
• translating research into strong teaching programmes.
The Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, is an SFI (Science
Foundation Ireland) research centre and is one of the largest data
analytics centres in Europe. It is co-led by four institutions: Dublin
City University, University College Cork, University College Dublin
and the University of Galway, with additional partner institutions in
Maynooth University, Trinity College Dublin, Tyndall and the
University of Limerick. The Insight SFI Research Centre for Data
Analytics undertakes high impact research in data analytics that has
significant benefits for people, industry, and society by enabling
better decision making. Insight supports over 450 researchers across
areas such as the Fundamentals of Data Science, Sensing and Actuation,
Scaling Algorithms, Model Building, Multi Modal Analysis, Data
Engineering and Governance, Decision Making and Trustworthy AI. This
research can be applied across areas such as Health and Human
Performance, Enterprise and Services, Smart Communities and IoT, and
Sustainability and Operations. Since its inception in 2013 it has
attracted over 150 million euro in funding awards from Government,
Industry and EU programmes.
One of the key roles of the Professorship is to further develop
strategic research areas and strategic research partnerships aligned
to Insight at the University of Galway.
Data and the science, analysis, management and application of data is,
by nature, multi-disciplinary, and therefore, the Professor will
provide leadership in engaging with multidisciplinary research
involving colleagues from across the university to reinforce existing
collaborations especially in the areas of sustainability, digital
humanities, healthcare, and policy-making. As well as the role in the
DSI, the appointee will be a member of academic staff in a school
within the College and will be expected to contribute to the teaching
of programmes in your School of primary affiliation.
We are seeking to appoint a Professor in the areas of Data Management.
The successful appointees will be an established research leader in
one or more of the following areas: Data Engineering and Governance;
Data Spaces, Data Analysis; Knowledge Graphs; Machine Learning;
Natural Language Processing; Statistical Data Science; Computational
Statistics; Statistical Learning; Data Visualisation, Simulation and
Discovery Informatics; and Trustworthy and Ethical Data Science.
The successful appointee will have relevant academic and research
leadership enabling her/him to:
• Contribute to the research leadership of the national Insight SFI
Research Centre for Data Analytics with counterparts in UCD, UCC and
DCU
• Lead the development, growth and expansion of the DSI portfolio of
research programmes and partnerships, including partnerships with
industry and other national Research Centres (including Lero,
VistaMilk and Adapt), as well as international research centres
• Lead the development and growth of the network of industry and
academic strategic partners associated with the DSI and Insight
• Lead the development of relevant teaching programme in your School
of primary affiliation, following a research-led teaching approach,
and the integration of data science-related modules in a range of
teaching programmes at the University of Galway

Salary: €95,823 to €128,079 per annum (applicable to new entrants
