?Wimpy? Neanderthals and ?Wily? Homo Sapiens ?
A Research Note
by
Karl M. van Meter
(Centre Maurice Halbwachs, Ecole normale
sup?rieure, Paris)
karl.vanmeter at ens.fr
We current-day Homo sapiens have from one to three percent Neanderthal
genetic material in our DNA, which means we did better than ?just got
along with them?. According to accepted dates, Neanderthals were living
in Europe some 300,000 years ago when we first arrived sometime around
45,000 years ago. Neanderthals ?disappeared? or had been completely
assimilated by Homo sapiens in Europe between 41,000 and 39,000 years
ago, with 95% probability according to Wikipedia, and a possible
cohabitation of 15,000 years. There has been extensive study and
speculation concerning this ?cohabitation?.
Two years ago, here in Paris, more specifically in the Grand
Amphitheatre of the ?Jardin des plantes?, the Foundation Fyssen awarded
its 41st annual prize for research in human and animal cognition to
Jean-Jacques Hublin from France and Svante P??bo from Sweden for having
sequenced the entire Neanderthal genome. For this work, P??bo was also
awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2022. In discussion
after the formal Fyssen presentation, P??bo made a joke and told us that
he and his colleagues often referred to Neanderthals as ?wimps? because
they had two genes coding for tactical sensitivity when we humans only
have one such gene. They were more sensitivity and therefore ?wimps?.
Although the exact genes have not yet been identified, one of the major
differences between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens, according to
primatologist Robin Dunbar, now at Oxford, is that we have a ?Dunbar
number? of 150 while it?s only 130 for Neanderthals. In more mundane
terms, that means we humans can mentally represent and manage
(?mentalize?) up to 150 individuals with our brain?s prefrontal context
? a region of the brain specifically dedicated to such mental activity ?
and Neanderthals were limited to 130 individuals. We were better social
networkers; we could mentally represent and manage more individuals and
their inter-relationships; we were more ?wily? than the Neanderthals in
dealing with people, managing resources and planning ahead for our
group. Since all other mental capacities seem to have been shared or
were similar for Neanderthals and Homo sapiens, there is reason to
believe that the former (the Neanderthals) could have actually noticed
that the latter (the Homo sapiens) were better at social management,
planning and networking, and may have wondered how they could benefit
from that capacity.
On the other hand, literally, to what advantage could Neanderthals put
their better tactical sensitivity in their relationship with these new
immigrants (Homo sapiens) to Europe, a hunting ground that the
Neanderthals had know for some 250,000 years? That?s where the 1995
discovery a 300,000 year old Neanderthal hunting and butchering site in
Sch?ningen, Germany, comes in. Exceptional conditions of preservation
resulted in the discovery of many wooden objects obviously used for
hunting. This included ?sticks? that the archaeologists did not hesitate
to call ?javelins?, and, in the more sensitive hands of Neanderthals,
represent formidable weapons for hunting and defence.
These javelins were examined not only by the archaeologists, but also by
an Olympian javelin specialist who stated the ?sticks? were identical
with current female Olympian javelins:
https://communities.springernature.com/posts/early-neanderthal-spears-going-the-distance.
Although you would have to be trained in their use, the javelins could
be thrown up to 60 or 70 metres, and Wikipedia considers they could kill
prey at 20 metres
(https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=oldest+Neanderthal+spear).
Although a single javelin couldn?t easily kill a large animal prey such
as a horse or a deer, it could wound it and several javelin hits could
incapacitate or kill such an animal.
It should be clearly noted that the 300,000 year old javelins were made
by Neanderthals alone some 250,000 years before the arrival of Homo
sapiens who, nonetheless, may have come from Africa equipped with
similar weapons of their own conception. Neanderthal predecessors, Homo
heidelbergensis, were known to have had hunting stick or shafts, but not
javelins or throwing sticks.
The ?wily? European immigrant Homo sapiens very probably noted that the
?wimpy? Neanderthals were proficient at hunting with their javelins and
providing meat, and that perhaps an entente could be worked out while at
the same time they were having babies together: Neanderthals could
specialize in hunting, providing meat and probably defending the group,
while Homo sapiens managed the meat and other resources and did the
group?s social organizing and networking.
A ?wimp-wily? entente full of possibilities for the future.

Call for papers: ISWC 2024 special session
**Harmonising Generative AI and Semantic Web Technologies: Opportunities, challenges, and benchmarks**
This special session aims to catalyse progress in Generative AI and Semantic Web Technologies by fostering in-depth discussions and collaborative problem-solving among researchers, practitioners, and industry leaders.
The session is organised in three dedicated slots, each focusing on a specific challenge or theme within the broader topic area. Through a combination of short paper presentations, focused discussions, and working groups, participants will share insights, identify open problems, and initiate collaborative projects. We encourage participation from researchers at all career stages.
The session is organised in three slots, each addressing a specific research agenda:
? Slot 1: Benchmarking & Reproducibility in Gen AI for Knowledge Engineering
? Slot 2: Bridging the Gap: Building Knowledge-Enhanced Gen AI
? Slot 3: Spotlight on Applications and Success Stories in Gen AI + Semantic Web
Each of the three slots will follow a similar structure designed to maximise engagement and facilitate tangible outcomes. This will include a combination of the following activities (please note that timings are purely indicative).
More information on the slots is available at:
https://tinyurl.com/Special-Session-LLMs
**Session Format**:
Each of the three slots will follow and will include the following activities (please note that timings are purely indicative).
? Slot kickstarter: short paper overview (15 minutes): A selection of short papers, submitted in advance, will be briefly pitched by the panellist to provide a concise overview of relevant research, tools, or datasets, that will kickstart the discussion.
? Focused discussion (60 minutes): Moderated discussions will delve deeper into the presented topics, allowing participants to share perspectives, raise questions, and identify key challenges. Depending on the slot, these may include hands-on activities, brainstorming sessions, or collaborative exercises.
? Follow-up (15 minutes): The idea of follow-up is for members to form and coordinate groups (with a leader) that meet up later in the conference (at coffee, lunch, dinner, etc.) and follow up on concrete actions. This is expected to generate concrete outputs, such as white papers, research agendas, or project proposals.
**Expected outcomes**
We anticipate the following outcomes from the special session:
? White Papers: Each slot will lay the groundwork for a collaboratively authored white paper summarising key findings, open problems, and potential research directions. We anticipate publishing the white papers as part of a special issue in a journal (to be defined).
? Research Agendas: The discussions and workshops are expected to generate research agendas outlining priority areas for future investigation.
? Collaborative projects and open repositories: We hope the session will spark new collaborations and initiatives to address the identified challenges.
**Submissions**
We welcome short papers (4 pages max) that:
1) define one or more benchmark proposals for some specific tasks, preferably if accompanied by a GitHub repository with additional material,
2) describe methods for the enrichment of LLMs with ontologies and KGs, or
3) present successful deployments of Generative AI with Semantic web technologies. More information is available in the Call for Papers below.
To kickstart each slot, we invite the submission of short papers (4 pages max, excluding references) addressing relevant topics within the scope of the special session. Papers should specifically address one of the specific slots and focus on presenting novel research, tools, and datasets or identifying open problems and challenges. We highly welcome papers that are accompanied by a GitHub repository with further relevant materials. Papers can be submitted via Easychair (http://easychair.org/) and are single-anonymous.
**Important dates:**
Submission deadline: September 20, 2024.
Notifications: October 7, 2024
Camera ready papers: October 14, 2024
Submissions should be formatted using the CEURART 1-column style (CEURART 1-column style). The title should use the emphasising capitalised style, and the paper should have no page numbers.
Papers will be assessed for relevance, clarity, novelty, and potential impact. With respect to novelty, we will prioritise papers that present a novel perspective or insight rather than necessarily presenting novel research contributions.

Jacopo de Berardinis, University of Liverpool
Paul Groth, University of Amsterdam
Albert Mero?o-Pe?uela, King?s College London
