The School of Data Science (SDS)at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for twotenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in the areasof Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, starting Fall 2025.
Position No.003226: Qualified applicants shouldspecialize in the areas of machine learning and large language models, be stronglyinterested in interdisciplinary and collaborative research, and will contributeto teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to methodologicalapproaches and advances in Artificial Intelligence. They should demonstrate the evidence of teaching interests that meet the needs of the School of Data Scienceundergraduate and graduate offerings in methodology and advances in artificialintelligence.
Position No.003227: Qualified candidates will focus onthe application of artificial intelligence in the areas of Healthcare,Business, Public Policy, or other domain applications for social good, such aspublic safety and public transit. Theyshould demonstrate the evidence of teachinginterests that meet the needs of the School of DataScience undergraduate and graduate offerings that will contribute to theteaching mission of the School.
Applicants who go beyond algorithm design and addressorganizational, behavioral and/or technological challenges to bring AItechnology to address real-world social and community challenges are ofparticular interest. Bothpositions will have the School of Data Science as their tenure home. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a related area, such as Data Science, Computer Science, or Information Science, by Fall 2025. Applicants should demonstrate interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and training, and have strong research and teaching interests in data science. Applicants are expected to show experience/promise of a strong research record that includes both high-quality peer-reviewed conference andjournal publications, and external funding.
The UNC Charlotte School of Data Science offers primarily in-personinstruction for its undergraduate and graduate programs. As such, it isexpected that all faculty will teach face-to-face and will maintain regularin-person office hours for purposes of student advising and assistance.
TheSchool of Data Science (SDS) (sds.charlotte.edu) is an interdisciplinary unithoused in the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI). The SDS, establishedin January2020, was the first School of Data Science in the Carolinas.Currently, the School offers a Bachelor of Science in Data Science, anundergraduate certificate in Sports Analytics, and two Master of Scienceprograms (Data Science and Business Analytics and Health Informatics andAnalytics). The SDS is planning to launch a Ph.D. in Data Science in Fall 2025,pending final approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commissionon Colleges (SACSCOC). The SDS teaches and researches methods to applystatistics and computer science techniques to develop data-driven solutions to real-worldproblems. These areas vary from the ethical application and use of data to communicationstudies, business, healthcare, social sciences, transportation, engineering,and more. The School has grown quickly to more than 800 students, with half ofthem being graduate students, and is continuing to evolve with the needs of thestudents, university, and community. Currently, the school has approximately 80full time, joint and affiliate faculty.
The anticipated start date for this position is August 11, 2025, withapplication review beginning December 1, 2024, and continuing untilfilled.
