Call for Mini-Track Proposals
AMCIS 2011 "IT Strategy and Management" Track
Deadline: November 1, 2010

AMCIS 2011, to be held in Detroit, USA, from August 4 - 8, 2011, is organizing a track on "IT Strategy and Management". The official web site is at http://amcis2011.aisnet.org/.

We invite scholars interested in research on IT Strategy and Management to propose mini-tracks for this track by November 1, 2010. To submit a mini-track proposal, please use the online system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/amcis2011. Please remember to specify that you would like the proposal placed under the "IT Strategy and Management" track.

Information technology strategy and management are critical issues for research and practice. In virtually every survey of practitioners, the alignment of IS and business strategies is rated as a significant challenge. Yet, there is little consensus on how an organization can articulate an IT strategy. Should IT strategy be derived from business strategy, be developed concurrently, or should it drive business strategy? What are the components of an effective IT strategy? Is alignment the appropriate goal, or is it, perhaps, "fusion" as some have suggested? These questions, and other related ones, continue to challenge IS managers and researchers alike.
A related subject is the management of the IS function and developing appropriate governance mechanisms. This includes a range of challenges-e.g., recruiting, training, and retaining IS personnel, leadership of the IS function and the evolving role of the CIO, implementation of effective service-management practices/frameworks such as ITIL, developing optimal sourcing strategies, creating efficient structures for the IT organization, managing information technology projects and many others.

The track's focus on both strategy and management means that a wide variety of mini-track topics would be appropriate. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
1. The alignment of IS and Business Strategies
                2. Managing the IT workforce in an increasingly global environment
                3. Balancing the need for planning with a changing technology landscape
                4. Security issues as they relate to implementing and enacting an organization's IS strategy
5. Strategic issues associated with the use of collaborative/social media tools (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
                6. Implementing service management practices/frameworks such as ITIL
                7. Structuring the IT organization
8. New theoretical approaches/frameworks for developing IS Strategy/Managing the IS Function
