CALL FOR PAPERS

AMCIS Mini-track: Collaboration in 3D Immersive Virtual Worlds
Track: Virtual Communities and Collaborations

17th Americas Conference on Information Systems - Detroit, Michigan, August 4 - 7, 2011

DESCRIPTION

Virtual worlds such as Second Life, World of Warcraft, Active Worlds, and similar environments have become platforms that are widely used for team and organizational collaboration. By "virtual worlds," we mean 3D immersive social and gaming environments that facilitate socialization, interaction, and rich communication through embodied user experience. Virtual worlds offer users a rich environment for collaboration not only because of "traditional" communication channels such as voice, text, and video, but also because of the shared spaces in which users can interact and collaborate using his or her avatar in ways that are not possible in most other communication media. These unique features of virtual worlds have led a variety of educators and organizations to use these environments as tools to facilitate collaborative activities among students and
organizational members.

Because of the growing importance of these environments and the potential for their continued use in business and education, it is important to understand how the unique features of these environments enable or constrain team and organizational collaboration. To address these issues, we seek papers that address the primary themes of this minitrack: (1) to advance theories and construct theoretical models to improve our ability understand and explain the impact of virtual worlds, and (2) to understand and explore the design, use, and evaluation of collaborative virtual environments and technologies.

POSSIBLE TOPICS

We encourage authors to submit either theoretical or empirical (both quantitative and qualitative) studies derived from various research disciplines using innovative research methodologies or multiple methods. Potential topics include but are not limited to:
* The development and examination of frameworks and taxonomies for assessing collaboration and organizational communication involving virtual world technologies and environments
* Theoretical models describing and making predictions about the design, use, and evaluation of innovative collaborative virtual world technologies
* Descriptions of innovative uses of virtual world tools and technologies for collaboration and organizational communication in business and educational settings
* The influence of virtual worlds on the behavior of team members, groups, and organizations
* Qualitative analysis of team processes, team member behaviors, and team member attitudes and perspectives when using virtual worlds environments and technologies
* The role and nature of virtual worlds in supporting intra- and inter-organizational communication and collaboration
* How virtual worlds influence organizational communication and the structure of organizations
