With globalization and heavy competition, companies are increasingly using
information technology to improve their efficiency, deliver high quality
products quicker and cheaper to the market place, innovate and gain
competitive advantage. With the advent of Web and other enabling
technologies such as Bio and Nano technologies, there is a growing trend in
the convergence of information and communication technologies in a number of
sectors. For example, in the traditional manufacturing industry, IT
convergence is used to reduce risks and production costs as well as improve
new product design. In the agriculture sector, IT convergence is
revolutionizing farming and cultivation. Agricultural products, grown under
automated systems (plant factories) and eco-friendly plant management
information systems are in demand. Fisheries use IT convergence applications
to create eco-friendly aquacultures.

Software and Services have always been associated with IT convergence.
However, currently they take on added importance since the newer computing
environments help design better software and services that accelerate IT
convergence. The case in point is IT convergence in the telecommunications
industry. As the telecom and IT industries converge, there is a great need
for the convergence of software across the two domains. One issue is the
underlying software engineering methodology for creating ICT convergence
applications. Telecom engineers and software engineers traditionally use
different approaches when developing services and applications. Should there
be a unified modeling and design approach?

The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for academics and
practitioners to identify and explore the issues, opportunities, and
solutions that promote IT convergence, particularly from the view point of
software engineering and service science. Increasing number of IT
convergence solutions are being developed in different application domains
employing a variety of techniques. This workshop is intended to increase
cross-fertilization of ideas from these domains, and share the lessons
learned. It is expected to serve as the spring-board for gathering and
disseminating experiences gained in implementing and integrating IT
convergence systems and services in an industrial setting.
