Dear Colleagues,
Re: Call for abstracts for the 'First International Conference on Emerging Research Paradigms in Business and Social Sciences', to be held by Middlesex University Dubai November 22-24, 2011 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates: http://www.mdx.ac/conference/
Due to forward planning and a flood of submissions over the last few days prior to the abstract deadline, and thus being able to secure extra venue space to cater for more delegates, our deadline has now been extended to Thursday 31st March, 2011. Importantly, the abstracts we have received are certainly reflecting a pertinent range of new conceptual ideas and innovative approaches to research. Therefore, if you have not yet submitted an abstract and wish to do so, please see details below.
There have been some interesting developments! Very recently we have established two very important conference sponsors: Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and Dubai International Academic City (DIAC). Furthermore, we now have a scientific advisory board up and running, involving distinguished academics. Please also be reminded that our key note speakers include leading social scientist Professor John Urry and soft systems pioneer Professor Peter Checkland. There will be a range of opportunities for us to publish papers as special editions of established journals or as chapter in an edited book.
Call for abstracts for Information and Knowledge Management (Including Information and Communication Technology) please see below:
Thank you
Kind regards

First International Conference on
Emerging Research Paradigms in Business and Social Sciences

Date: 22-24 November 2011
Venue: Hotel Pullman Dubai Mall of the Emirates
The objective of this conference is to provide an opportunity for academics to discuss new concepts, progressive methodologies, embryonic approaches and innovative practices within the world of business and the wider social environment. Given that social enquiry is still a maturing field of educational study within this region, it is crucial that business systems, processes and structures are considered in conjunction with contributions from such contemporary fields of social enquiry as media studies, psychology, sociology, tourism and education. This is indeed pertinent for understanding service sector economies and societies, as well as comprehending the future role of education as a strategy and contributor to a sustainable learning culture and environment.

Middlesex University Dubai will hold its First International Conference on Emerging Research Paradigms in Business and Social Sciences (ERPBSS) from 22-24 November, 2011 in Dubai, UAE. The theme of the conference is particularly apt for UAE and Dubai at many different levels. The UAE is seen as one of the top ten emerging nations in the world. Starting from its humble beginnings, the country has burst on to the world stage as a dynamic economy boasting of ultra-modern cities such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai, cities capable of being compared favourably in terms of social and physical infrastructure with some of the great cities of the world. The UAE is also an emerging centre in tourism, health, construction and many other areas. More significantly, it is staking its claim to be called a major educational centre in the region. With over 50 foreign universities present, the claim does have much credibility. Equally striking has been the large number of countries represented among the student population and faculty alike.
Full details can be found at the conference website: http://www.mdx.ac/conference/

Information and Knowledge Management (Including Information and Communication Technology)

The information and knowledge management track of this conference aims to examine emerging paradigms and innovative practices in information and knowledge management, particularly those related to the adoption, use and implications of information and communication technology. We are seeking papers that engage theoretically with the subject area and/or signify pioneering applications and developments. The objective is to present work that is transformative and which embraces serious intellectual discussion. Scholarly endeavour that unearths nascent areas of academic study, or progressively questions existing paradigms and epistemological applications will be most welcome. This track will thus attempt to encourage a multi-disciplinary academic forum for the cross-pollination of ideas between the applied and social scientific perspectives. The overall aim of this track is to present a new agenda for future research and theoretical exposition.

Chairs: Ms. Engie Bashir and Dr. Lejla Vrazalic

Coordinator: Dr Cody Morris Paris

- Business:

Professor Peter Checkland
Lancaster University,
Lancaster, UK.

Peter Checkland gained a first in chemistry at Oxford in the 1950s. He joined ICI when it was developing a new industry: making synthetic fibres from nylon and polyester polymers. Working first as a technologist then as a manager, Peter remained with ICI for fifteen years. When he left to start a second career in university teaching and research, he was manager of a 100-strong research and development group. Joining the postgraduate Department of Systems Engineering at Lancaster University, Peter Checkland led what became a thirty-year programme of action research in organizations outside the university. Initially the research theme was to examine the possibility of using the well-developed methods of systems engineering in management problem situations rather than in the technically defined problem situations in which methods had been refined. This attempt at transfer failed, and the action research moved in a different direction. The work finally established Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) as an approach to tackling the multi-faceted problems which managers face; in doing this, it also established the now well-recognized distinction between 'hard' and 'soft' systems thinking. SSM is now taught and used around the world. Its development through action research is described in many papers and in five books: Systems Thinking, Systems Practice (1981); Soft Systems Methodology in Action (with J. Scholes, 1990); Systems, Information and Information Systems (with Sue Holwell, 1998) SSM; A 30-Year Retrospective (1999); and Learning for Action (with John Poulter, 2006).
Peter Checkland's work has been recognized in a number of awards: he holds honorary doctorates from City University, the Open University, Erasmus University (The Netherlands), and Prague University of Economics, also a Most Distinguished and Outstanding Contributor Award from the British Computer Society. He has been awarded the Gold Medal of the UK Systems Society, and the Beale Medal of the Operational Research Society. In 2009 he was made Honorary Distinguished Visiting Professor of South China Normal University.
