All:

We have recently received curriculum approval to offer (at MSU in the coming
year) a new doctoral research seminar on IS Security Theory and Methods.
Our goal is to provide our PhD students the opportunity to learn the
foundation literature in this field, to appreciate the role of various
theories (PMT, Deterrence, etc.), to identify specific methodological
challenges and opportunities within the IS Security domain, and to establish
solid instincts regarding the appropriate ones to choose when pursuing
various research questions of interest. To that end, I have written a
preliminary syllabus and readings list. My colleague, Kent Marett, will be
assisting me in developing and delivering this material. France Belanger
from Virginia Tech is also developing a similar course. We appeal for your
assistance.

We would like to know if you have offered a similar PhD-level research
seminar or know of any such courses, and if we might learn from your
experiences. (If not, please offer your advice as well.) What materials
did you cover, what was effective, and what projects have you assigned your
students? Certain early seminal works (e.g. Straub and Welke), plus the two
recent special issues on IS Security (in MISQ and EJIS) and several other
key articles in ISR, DSS, JAIS, and others, will form the foundation
literature for this course, as well as certain articles from reference
disciplines (e.g. criminology) and methodological articles to expose the
students to issues related to research design, data collection, analysis,
and interpretation.

Your input and guidance would be welcome, and we will reciprocate by sending
you our final syllabi in the coming year. Thank you.
