Call for Papers: ACM SIG-MIS Computers and People Research (CPR) 2012

Fifty Golden Years of CPR: Reflecting on the Past and Envisioning the Future

Doubletree Hotel, Milwaukee, WI

May 31st-June 2nd, 2012

IMPORTANT DATES

Paper submission 16th October, 2011

Notification of acceptance 23rd January, 2012

Camera-ready papers 4th April, 2012

Conference Theme:

For the past 50 years, ACM SIGMIS CPR has engaged the academic and practitioner communities in understanding issues pertaining to supply of information technology (IT) professionals, demand for their skills and talents, and their readiness for the workplace. Many issues have evolved and matured with changes in technology, organizational valuation of IT, globalization, and economic downturns and upswings. The past 50 years of CPR has witnessed several generations of IT professionals who underwent this cycle of preparation, recruitment, and retention. As baby boomers retire, a new generation of IT professionals presents yet another set of opportunities and challenges for continued research. What have we learned in the past 50 years? What do we envision as emerging issues for the next 50? On its 50th anniversary, SIG-MIS CPR aims to reflect upon these contributions to theory and research and identify new and emergent issues.

Exciting Changes to CPR

- Renamed Computers and People Research to reflect changes that have broadened the definition of IT professionals.

- Expanded to include more sessions aimed at engaging practitioners in working themes such as diversity, social inclusion, recruiting and retention, skills, etc. Practitioner panels and round-tables will offer ideas for research to be delivered in the following year?s conference, creating a cycle of responsive and applied research.

List of Relevant Topics:

ACM SIG-MIS CPR 2012 welcomes research and practice submissions that address issues congruent with the conference theme and traditional topics related to the IT workforce. These topics include, but are not limited to:

- Career development practices of IT professionals

- Professional or occupational commitment in IT

- Motivations of computer personnel

- Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the coming decade

- Role profiles; job profiles

- Work satisfaction and staff turnover in IT

- Offshore supplementation impact

- Impact of IT consumerization and mobilization workforce and user skills

- The roles of culture (organizational, occupational or societal) in IT and IT work

- Diversity and cultural issues in the development, attraction and retention of IT professionals

- Increasing IT enrolments, especially regarding gender and minorities

- IS curriculum issues and trends

- Ethical and security issues

- Staffing models

- Mainframe skills shortage

- Baby boomer retirement and transition

Doctoral Consortium:

A doctoral consortium will take place on the day prior to the conference. The consortium is targeted at students in early stages of dissertation proposal-writing on topics pertaining to CPR to: 1) provide feedback and guidance on proposals in stages where feedback can be beneficial for future dissertation work and 2) provide mentoring and networking opportunities to students. Doctoral students must be nominated to the consortium by a PhD advisor. Nominated students should submit a 10-page research proposal (including all text, figures, and references) to be reviewed by a panel of highly qualified senior faculty mentors. The 3-5 students selected to participate in the doctoral consortium will receive two rounds of written feedback on their proposal. Each student will have 40-60 minutes to present their research ideas and receive feedback in-person from six-to-eight experienced CPR researchers. Due date for consortium submissions is same as for papers. A limited number of travel grants are available, requests for which must be submitted to Dr. Michael Gallivan (MGallivan at gsu.edu). Non-presenting doctoral students are highly encouraged to participate.

Format of Submissions:

ACM SIGMIS 2012 welcomes completed research papers, research-in-progress papers, industry case studies, and proposals for panel discussions or tutorials. All papers must be original, unpublished elsewhere, and in the style of MIS Quarterly. All submissions will be blind reviewed.

(ICIS), the AIS Special Interest Group on the Philosophy and Epistemology of
Information Systems (AIS-SIGPHIL) will hold its first concurrent-ICIS
SIGPHIL Research Workshop during two evenings of the ICIS conference in
Shanghai, China. Although labeled as a workshop, this event provides an

*PROGRAM *

Since its infancy, IS research has struggled to reconcile the technological
and the human/social nature of information systems, and to investigate them
in a comprehensive and coherent way. This workshop compares traditional
sociotechnical approaches with the emerging sociomaterial approach that
explores new ways of seeing and theorizing IS without separating the
technological from the social.

approach to IS research and sharing latest updates on MIS Quarterly?s
special issue on sociomateriality.

9:00-9:45pm Workshop paper reviews

9:45-10:00pm Workshop wrap-up

*WORKSHOP PAPER REVIEWS*

We invite you to submit your philosophy-related works, or works-in-progress
to be reviewed by selected discussants. Papers can be as short as 2 pages or
full-length papers. Papers should be designed to encourage in-depth
discussion during the workshop. Submitting authors will present their papers
and discussants will be selected to discuss each paper. We are particularly
interested in papers that address domain-specific philosophical perspectives
that contribute to the progress and stewardship of their domains such that
the IS field can truly meet the needs of society. Regardless of which IS
specialty we lay claim to, we are more than ever in need of philosophical
perspectives to guide our collective understanding of what we do as
researchers. However, we welcome all papers on any IS philosophy-related
topics. Doctoral students and junior faculty members are especially
encouraged to submit their research. Student papers will be given special
consideration. The SIGPhil can provide written confirmation for authors
needing support for conference travel. Submit all papers to
nhassan at d.umn.edu before October 31st, 2011.

*Important Information and dates:*

Register for ICIS Conference and workshop as early as possible

Workshop Registration Fee: $80 includes two dinners.

*BACKGROUND*

Association for Information Systems (AIS) Special Interest Group on
Philosophy and Epistemology (SIGPhilosophy)

The SIGPhilosophy provides a focal point for philosophy-related topics and
discussions in information systems (IS) research that are currently
dispersed over many conference proceedings, journals and books. By drawing
on the philosophical literature, the SIGPhilosophy seeks to strengthen the
exchange of ideas and community ties within the AIS and with other
disciplines, especially the human, cultural and social sciences, and
ultimately enhance IS research and the application of research results. The
SIGPhilosophy manages a new home Wiki page at
http://education.aisnet.org/sigphilwiki and a listserv that members of the
AIS can sign up for at http://www.aisnet.org/ais_lists/memberslists.aspx.
