Call for submissions
CEMS Doctoral Consortium “Methodology and rigour in Enterprise Networks, Innovation and ICT research”
Corvinus University of Budapest, Budapest, Hungary
February 15-17, 2012

Overview
The doctoral consortium on “Methodology and rigour in enterprise networks and ICT research” aims to bring together Ph.D. candidates and faculty members, in order to facilitate focused and in-depth discussions. This session in Budapest at Corvinus University (CUB) aims at discussing the pivotal importance of methodology in ICT and networking research with special attention to the pluralism and innovativeness in this area. We welcome proposals around the following themes:
• Business networks and inter-organisational systems;
• The role of interorganizational networks for innovation;
• Managing innovation in networks;
• Mechanisms and patterns of technology development and diffusion;
• Platforms for high-tech product development and marketing;
• Commercializing strategies for technology-based products;
• Product and service combinations;
• Communities of practice and architectures for participation;
• ICT and new modes of organising (e.g. CSCW, virtual/ distributed forms of organising);
• IS innovation processes (i.e. processes of ICT-enabled social/organisational change);
• The relationship between ICT development and user centric innovation;
• Enterprise networks, risk and globalization
• Rigour and relevance revisited
• Methodological pluralism

The CEMS and NITIM consortium (www.NITIM.eu) is the Ph.D. network on Networks, Information Technology and Innovation Management. The doctoral consortium meets regularly at one of the participating universities and is meant to facilitate multidisciplinary debates at the intersection of disciplines like information systems, management, engineering, or sociology. It puts particular emphasis on qualitative, theoretically informed empirical research.

Target group and eligibility
Submissions to the Ph.D. consortium are encouraged from Ph.D. candidates, whose research interests lie within the fields described above. If you are in doubt, please contact the organizers. We invite Ph.D. candidates to join CEMS-NITIM already at an early stage of their study, because we encourage repeated participation throughout the Ph.D. process. With the submission of the proposal a supporting letter from a faculty member is expected (either the Supervisor or the Director of the Ph.D. programme).

Organisation
The core of the programme will be centred on the critical and constructive discussion of the Ph.D. candidates’ research proposals. In particular, research design (i.e. the linkage between an identified problem area, a research question and the appropriate methodology) will be discussed. In order to facilitate in-depth discussions of candidates’ research, and to provide some additional guidance, the overall number of participants will be limited to 25.

The consortium is also meant to provide additional input, such as:
• talks by invited speakers about ongoing research and/or methodological issues (e.g.different research traditions in innovation, IS and neighbouring disciplines);
• discussions about the (changing) landscape of research and higher education in Europe (at the EU level and at national levels);
• open fora about practical considerations (publishing, job market, etc.)

In addition to providing guidance and feedback to the Ph.D. candidates outside the student supervisor relationship, attendees will have an opportunity for benchmarking their progress (where do I stand vis-à-vis my peers?) and building networks with peers. Repeated participation for establishing long standing networks is encouraged.

Ph.D. candidates (and faculty) are expected to stay for the entire consortium in order to benefit from the discussions and interventions as they unfold over the duration of the event. Participating on the full doctoral consortium will count for 3 ECTS. The workload is subdivided into the participation (one third) and the Ph.D.-proposal (two thirds).

Special features of the Corvinus Workshop – focus on skill development
Based on feedback from the Tampere consortium this time we will focus on some key “academic” skill development apart from discussing students´progress in their research. According to our plans this will entail the following:

a) exercise on methodology such as questionnaire design, interview and possible text analysis,
b) review of papers, acting as editorial board or reviewers asked by journal editors
c) discussion on research trends and directions in our field
d) discussion of pre-assigned reading on some relevant topic (methodology, theory, research debate etc.
e) analysis and presentation of research papers from leading conferences and their “reviewer comments” such as ICIS, ECIS, HICCS or other.

Due to the intensive nature of the workshop during the organising committee will develop a detailed agenda for the skill development exercises. Regardless of the particular topics, the effectiveness of this endeavor will depend on pre-workshop preparation which is a new element in the CEMS-NITIM consortium. Specifically, we will require the following from the participating Ph.D. students,

a) reading of one or two assignment papers which will be determined by January 20. 2012.
b) prepare and make available raw research data, both qualitative and quantitative in order to support the methodology workshop with real and relevant inventory of discussion topics.

In order to exploit this new idea, we also encourage students to bring forward specific questions and problems in these areas. For instance, for the Budapest workshop we accept papers which only deal with methodology and/or theory without outlining the full research plan or results.

Location and costs
The consortium will be held in Budapest, Hungary.
Conference location: premises of CUB (Corvinus University of Budapest)
Hotel: to be determined

It is expected that Ph.D. candidates will pay their accommodation and breakfast. There will be no additional costs for the participation, since CUB has a special research grant from which additional costs will be subsidized.

Submission
Submissions by Ph.D. candidates are sought, which should include:
• A research proposal or progress report (4000-5000 words) indicating in which phase of the Ph.D. process the candidate is, motivation, research question, relevance, results.
• Literature, research design/ methodology, expected outcomes;
• A statement by the Supervisor or Ph.D. programme Director about the status of the Ph.D. candidate, and a recommendation that he/she will benefit from the consortium.
The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2012.
