The Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University will host a PhD course in Software Innovation<http://darsis.dk/index.php?id=97>

The dates are May 1-3 2012, and the principal instructor will be Professor John Carroll<http://www.cse.psu.edu/people/carroll>, of Penn State University.

The course will discuss the nature of software innovation, especially its relation to creativity and design rationale. We will scope the emerging research area, identifying background, terms and concepts, major issues and challenges, and suitable research methods through a number of identified key readings. A central focus will be understanding innovation in software and software development, and its relationship to organisational and community renewal. Subsidiary themes can include creativity, creativity methods and techniques, teamwork, innovation management and programming innovation.

We will develop an extended example of software innovation using scenario-based usability engineering as a candidate framework and community and community informatics as a potential incubator.

The course will interest students working with software, software development and IT in organisations or for defined user communities, where there is an innovation potential. Exercises include innovation games and planning for software projects to mutually leverage creativity and design rationale, and students will work together to understand how software innovation can contribute to their research projects, and how it can be planned, carried out, and reported in scientific journals.

To enrol (deadline is April 9th): send an email to astrid(at)cs.aau.dk<http://cs.aau.dk/> with the following information: your name, email, affiliation, supervisor name, a 200-word description of your PhD project.

There will be a maximum of 20 students enrolled in the course. The course is sponsored by DaRSIS<http://darsis.dk/index.php?id=37> and all teaching costs are covered, but students must find their own travel and subsistence expenses. There is therefore no enrolment fee; however a late (last week) withdrawal fee of DK 700 will be charged for those dropping out without adequate reason.
