[AISWorld] Summary IS Research Repository

Hi All,
A few weeks ago I posted the following request.

As research and information is exploding, a.k.a. "big data" conducting a thorough literature review is becoming a daunting, time-consuming task. While many in academia have snubbed open sourced information sources such as Wikipedia, I believe it would be extremely useful for AIS, another organization or dare I suggest even an open sourced group to develop a wiki site for sharing literature searches.

In conducting a literature review I feel I am often re-creating the wheel. The authors of articles by sited in research have conducted literature reviews, so future research is duplicating their efforts. A site dedicated to IS research would be one way to begin dealing with the increased burden of information overload. A new model for research publication and sharing needs to be created.

Should not we in information technologies be leading the way?

I would appreciate your thoughts!

Rick:

I completely agree with your point. I think one of the best illustrations of what you're describing is what Mike Myers (former AIS Pres) has been maintaining regarding Qualitative Research Instruments (http://www.qual.auckland.ac.nz/). This is a living / breathing site for meshing studies that focus on qualitative research instruments & design in IS research. You can also find similar focal topics of living scholarship in the new AIS website here (http://start.aisnet.org/?Research).

But, to your larger point, those links focus more on IS Research Methods & Instruments and do not capture domain specific literature reviews in a consolidated manner.

This is a great idea. Is this something that you could draft a proposal as an enhancement / addition to the AIS e-Library and / or the AIS Website? The proposal would likely be submitted through the Publications Committee and then on to the AIS Council (if needed.) Another point to consider is that we recently started a New Initiative Fund at AIS to set aside funds in order to develop / nurture new ideas such as this (projects that benefit the entire AIS Community on a global basis.) Although we are still trying to build the reserves in this fund, there could be some funding available (if needed) to help ignite and sustain this idea. For example (... just brainstorming here....), a Call could be issued for someone to consolidate the references of the top 10 Literature Reviews in the research domain field of (#ABC-123). We might even offer a one-time $500 stipend for completing this task and posting this information on the AIS website or AISeL, across a minimum of 5 areas. (Anyhow... something to that effect?) Your proposal would have to develop and put a better framework around the idea. The AIS Council needs to approve the use of New Initiative Funds...but if the proposal and idea are drafted well... I think this would be a great use of this 'seed' money to help ignite the idea.

Hope this feedback helps.

Sincerely,

Matt Nelson

Hello,
In the past the IS community has created and shared endnote data libraries on different topics. This was helpful but very inefficient.
Recently I have used Mendeley to create and share document references for topics with colleagues that I am working with on a joint project. This might be worth considering.
There are other alternatives (zotero), but I find the Mendeley web site (and desktop client) to be very user friendly and effective.
Just an idea,

As a start, we've got topic-based EndNote libraries...

Mendeley offers their comparison of reference sites at http://www.mendeley.com/compare-mendeley/. What is the best approach?
A site with a list of references? I lean toward a wiki that goes beyond just listing references to something that presents current theory and/or practice.
Your thoughts and comments are welcome.
