Engaging Remote Employees: The Moderating Role of "Remote" Status in Determining Employee Information Security Policy Awareness

Allen C. Johnston (School of Business, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, USA), Barbara Wech (School of Business, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, USA) and Eric Jack (School of Business, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, USA)

Using social cognitive theory as a framework, this study proposes and tests a behavioral model to predict how "remote" status impacts the manner in which social learning cues influence employee awareness of information security policies and ultimately differentiates him or her from in-house employees in terms of information security policy awareness. Based on data acquired from an online sample of 435 fulltime employees across numerous industries and structural equation modeling analysis, the findings suggest that, compared to their in-house counterparts, remote employees experience lower levels of vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and situational support, thereby resulting in diminished levels of information security policy awareness. These findings have strong implications for managers of remote employees and for organizations seeking to reduce the risk associated with an ever-increasing remote workforce. The findings also advance social cognitive theory by incorporating information security policy awareness as an important outcome formed from perceptions of social learning cues external to the individual, but present within the organization.

PAPER TWO

A Social-Feedback Enriched Interface for Software Download

Gianluca Dini (Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione, Università di Pisa, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy), Pierfrancesco Foglia (Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione, Università di Pisa, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy), C. Antonio Prete (Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione, Università di Pisa, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy) and Michele Zanda (Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione, Università di Pisa, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy)

Software downloading over the Internet is a major solution for publishers to deliver their software products. In this context, user interfaces for software downloading must be designed carefully. They should provide usable interactions and support users when deciding whether to accept the software product or not. This work proposes to enrich a common browser interface for software downloading with a reputation system - a mechanism for collecting and presenting user feedback. The reputation system is assessed with a usability study. The authors' results show that positive user rankings are effective in increasing user download acceptances for well-known publishers and common name publishers, as well as in increasing acceptance motivations related to trust aspects. In addition, the presence of the reputation system reduces incoherent user behaviors.

PAPER THREE

Are Mobile Spreadsheet Applications Usable?

Derek Flood (Department of Computing and Communication Technologies, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK), Rachel Harrison (Department of Computing and Communication Technologies, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK), Claudia Iacob (Department of Computing and Communication Technologies, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK), Ann Nosseir (Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK) and Kevin McDaid (Software Technology Research Centre, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland)

Many businesses are heavily reliant on data and many people working in business like to have almost constant access to this data. Mobile phones provide users with access to a wide range of office applications, including word processors, email applications, and spreadsheet applications. However the limitations of the mobile devices can cause a number of usability issues which may limit the productivity of users of these devices. This paper presents the authors' investigation of the usability of mobile spreadsheet applications. Through a controlled study they examined the performance of users using a mobile spreadsheet application to perform a series of simple tasks, such as finding data and altering values in the spreadsheet. The authors found that although mobile spreadsheet applications can be effective, they are highly inefficient due to a large number of usability issues.
