About PESOS 2014
================

PESOS has established itself as a forum that brings together software
engineering researchers and practitioners working in the areas of
service-oriented systems to discuss research challenges, new
developments and applications, as well as methods, techniques,
experiences, and tools to support engineering, evolution and adaptation
of service- oriented systems. The technical advances and growing
adaption of the Cloud computing is creating new challenges for the PESOS
community to explore approaches to better engineer software-intensive
systems that are designed, developed, operated and governed in the
context of the Cloud. This year's forum seeks high-quality reports
that provide insight into better approaches to take full advantage of
the qualities offered by cloud infrastructures, or to account for lack
of full control over important software quality attributes.

Theme: SOA and Cloud Systems
============================

Cloud Computing is shaping the way that organizations acquire and use
systems -- software-as-a-service (SaaS) model -- and how they
develop and deploy systems -- platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and
infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) models. This emerging computing
paradigm is having a significant impact on the way modern software is
designed, developed, deployed and governed. Even though cloud platforms
and infrastructures are typically designed to scale on demand, the
question is whether this automatic elasticity translates to all services
deployed on them. Other qualities of concern and interest in this
environment include monitorability, manageability, privacy, security,
availability and reliability. Software-intensive services in the cloud
will have to be better engineered, to either take advantage of the
qualities offered by cloud platforms and infrastructures or to account
for lack of full control over important quality attributes. There are
therefore a number of open software engineering research challenges
related to design, development, deployment, use, and integration of
software and cloud services.

Topics
======

This year's PESOS forum seeks contributions addressing, but not limited
to, the following topics related to software engineering for services in
the cloud:

* Service engineering for elasticity, scalability, monitorability, and
  other attributes expected of cloud services
* Methods and tools for design-time software engineering support for
  desired run-time behavior in the cloud
* Management and governance of service-oriented systems in the cloud
* Requirement engineering issues for cloud services
* Adaptation and evolution of service-oriented systems
* Service personalization and context-aware provisioning in the cloud
* Service dependability, survivability, reliability and resilience
* Trust, security, and privacy in service-oriented systems
* Quality of service (QoS) and Service-level Agreements (SLAs)
* Management of non-functional requirements for cloud services
* Verification and validation of service-oriented systems
* System migration to service-oriented systems in the cloud
* Service delivery models for mobile users and mobile applications.
* Service-oriented systems supporting cloud-based provisioning.
* Case studies and industry experiences.
* Cloud requirements and design for growing markets.

In addition, PESOS 2014 will continue 'The Quest for Case Studies'.
Started at PESOS 2012 as a special session, we are now making it an
essential part of the workshop as the forum for researchers and
practitioners sharing this vision and willing to contribute with their
effort and experience. The goal is to create the reference set of case
studies for the research community in service-oriented systems, hosted
on a publicly available repository:
http://www.s-cube-network.eu/use-cases.

Paper Submission and Publication
================================

Workshop paper submissions: January 24, 2014
Notification to authors: February 24, 2014
Camera-ready copies of authors' papers: March 14, 2014

The submission and review process will be done using EasyChair
(http://www.easychair.org/?conf=pesos2014). Submissions must follow the
IEEE formatting guidelines. All accepted papers will be published in the
conference electronic proceedings and in both ACM Digital Library and
IEEE Digital Library.

All contributions will be reviewed and evaluated based on originality,
technical quality and relevance to the workshop theme. The page limit
for regular papers is 10 pages and 2 pages for case study descriptions.
In addition, accepted case study submissions must commit to place all
case study artifacts in the public repository.
