Subject: Visiting researchers and postdoctoral fellows

    *From:* Sanders, Ian
*Subject:* Visiting researchers and postdoctoral fellows

Hi all,

Unisa (University of South Africa) is the largest Open Distance Learning
university in Africa. The School of Computing (SoC) in the College of
Science Engineering and Technology (CSET) offers courses across the range
from Information Systems to Computer Science. For more information on SoC,
CSET and Unisa see www.unisa.ac.za.

The university has just issued a call for Visiting Researchers and another
for Postdoctoral Fellowships.

*The call for Visiting Researchers closes on the 20th of March 2105.*

The term will be from 2 months to two years (agreed by visitor and host)
and that the visiting researcher will be expected to produce research
outputs with Unisa as their academic affiliations (this is a requirement
because of the South Africa research subsidy system). Unisa will pay
travel costs, initial accommodation costs and a monthly stipend which is
linked to the Unisa salary scales. Unisa salaries are pretty good in
comparison to most other universities in South Africa.

*The call for Postdoctoral Fellowships is open.*

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for an initial period of a year which
can be renewed for a second year based on performance. SoC currently has 4
active postdocs. Funding for postdocs is currently R300,000.00 per year tax
free which does not translate well into dollars but does allow one to
live relatively comfortably while in SA. As a comparison a qualified High
School teacher with around 5 years of experience would earn about
R160,000.00 and a lecturer (equivalent to a new assistant professor) at
Unisa would earn around R300,000.00.

The School of Computing would be particularly interested in people working
in Computer Science Education or ICT for Development but we have strengths
in quite a few different areas. We also have an active eye-tracking
laboratory.

If you might be interested in visiting us and if you would like to hear
more about the University or the calls for visiting researchers and/or
postdocs, then please email me directly (sandeid at unisa.ac.za).

Please feel free to pass this message on to anyone you think might be
interested.

Regards

Ian
