Idaho State University’s Informatics and Computer Science department and
the College of Business are pleased to announce a new Master of Science
degree program in Health Informatics (MSHI). Courses will begin this
Fall (August 2016) and the program is currently accepting applications.
Please share this announcement with any graduates who may be interested.
Health Informatics lies at the intersection of information systems,
health care, and business administration. The goal of Health Informatics
is to enhance human health and well-being through the use of information
systems to deliver more efficient and safer patient care as well as
improve patient outcomes at the individual, organizational, and national
levels. By integrating innovative technology in patient care, Health
Informatics is revolutionizing healthcare practice and research.
There is a critical shortage of workers with skills that span both
informatics and healthcare domains. Healthcare providers, insurance
companies, and drug and device firms compete with each other for
talented Health Informaticists. The shortage has become so severe that
some companies have resorted to poaching talent from competitors or
engaging in bidding wars to lure Health Informatics professionals to
their firms while others have resigned themselves to hiring Health
Informatics consultants to help fill the gaps in their IT ranks.
Idaho State University is the state's designated lead institution in
health professions and medical education and the MSHI program is
consistent with the statewide initiative for education in the health
professions. The Informatics and Computer Science department has a
history of providing high-quality education by faculty engaged in
scholarly research at the forefront of Health Informatics.
By drawing on multiple disciplines, the MSHI program exposes students to
the fundamentals of informatics as well as the function, operation, and
nature of health care. Most courses are delivered by our expert Health
Informatics faculty, and the program also includes courses from both the
Health Care Administration and Public Health programs in the Kasiska
School of Health Professions. The required courses for the MSHI degree
are as follows:
*
Statistical Methods for Data Analytics
*
Health Informatics
*
Health Information Governance
*
Healthcare Workflow Process Analysis and Redesign
*
Health Data Analytics
*
Electronic Health Records
*
Management of Informatics Projects
*
Health Law and Bioethics
*
US and Global Health System
*
Health Clinical Practicum
The MSHI program will be available both on our main campus in Pocatello
as well as on our Meridian campus, home of the Idaho State University
Meridian Health Science Center. Courses will initially be offered in a
traditional classroom learning environment, but will be made available
online in the near future. This new program will not only help address a
critical shortage of graduates with skills spanning both informatics and
health care, but will also provide graduates with opportunities to use
their Health Informatics expertise to improve the quality and safety of
patient care, helping others and making a difference in people’s live
through informatics.
