Editor’s Introduction

Ting-Peng Liang

Abstract

Designing effective information systems is a core issue in information
systems. A large body of research has been published. One approach that has
been advocated is the adaptive design of information systems that can
produce flexible technological solutions for business problems.

1) Evaluating User-System Adaptability in the Use of Web-Based
Information Systems through the Model of Access Efficiency

Bingcong Zeng and Benjamin P.-C. Yen

Abstract

Mutual adaptation between users and information systems as a significant
research area is drawing more attention. This paper aims to construct an
indicator to measure and evaluate the inter-adaptability between users and
systems on the Web. We define inter-adaptability as the extent of match
between users’ preference and IS properties during the process of
adaptation. It is vital to IS management since the quality of match between
the two sides can dramatically influence the efficiency of IS use. In
reality users and system are interactively adapting to each other in order
to accommodate both sides’ needs. However, most existing literature
confines in the adaptation only on the system side. This study bridges the
gap by taking into account the factors of both user-side and system-side
adaptation, and for the first time connects the inlink properties with
users’ preference, offering a quick and practical measure to evaluate
user-system adaptability. By using this measure, practitioners can easily
identify inefficient access problems in the exploitation of IS. To response
to those problems identified, three strategies are proposed as a guideline
for improvement. At the end, an empirical study on a blog system is
elaborated, which shows the applicability of the model in practical use.

2) Using Multidisciplinary Design Principles to Improve the Website
Design Process

Sangeeta Karmokar, Harminder Singh and Felix B Tan

Abstract

An organization's success in e-business is significantly affected by the
quality of its website. However, many websites are unable to retain the
attention of their customers, arguably because they only cater to some of
the needs of their customers. This study adopts a design science approach
to develop a new methodology for designing websites that addresses the
psychological, sociological, and cognitive needs of individual users. The
methodology is based on multidisciplinary principles drawn from the field
of design, as they provide a framework for structuring the various concerns
of users. This study contributes by developing a website design methodology
anchored in users’ needs, so that the websites it produces are successful
in achieving their goals.

3) Translation to Inter-organizational Systems Integration: The Effect
of Power and the Mediating Role of the Obligatory Passage Point

Neil Chueh-An Lee and Eric E.G. Wang

Abstract

IOS integration has become a competitive necessity in recent industrial
environment. Thus, in the supply chain, dominant firms often try to exert
their power to influence their dependent firms to implement IOS
integration. However, whether power helps or hurts an integrated IOS
implementation is still an unresolved issue. Mixed results on this issue
from prior studies demand a further examination on such a context. Based on
the circuits of power framework and the concept of obligatory passage point
(OPP), this study identifies three factors that mediate the effect of power
on the implementation of IOS integration, including competitive necessity,
interestingness, and firm readiness. We accordingly develop a theoretical
model with six hypotheses. Based on a sample of 134 manufacturing firms and
PLS analysis, all hypotheses receive empirical support from the data. The
findings suggest that the flows of exercised power and potential power into
IOS integration can go through those mediators. Exercised power can promote
competitive necessity that lead dependent firms to perceive greater
interestingness and achieve higher firm readiness, resulting in a high
level of IOS integration. Potential power supplements exercised power in
facilitating interestingness and firm readiness. These two types of power
also demonstrate different effects on those mediators. While exercised
power has a greater impact on competitive necessity and no impact on
interestingness, potential power produces an opposite result. This study
therefore clarifies the effect of different types of power on IOS
implementation. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are
provided.
