CALL FOR PAPERS

HICSS 2018 Minitrack: Software Development for Mobile Devices,
Wearables, and the Internet-of-Things
(Software Technology Track)

3-6 January 2018

MINITRACK DESCRIPTION
Applications for mobile devices (apps) have facilitated the success
of smartphones and tablets. By using apps, the multi-purpose hardware
of modern devices can be utilized to the full extent. Despite much
progress with regard to development methods, software development
kits, and frameworks, app development poses many challenges. This is
even truer for novel mobile devices such as wearables and for the
hardware that constitutes the Internet-of-Things (IoT).
Compatibility, performance, battery-saving, security, and testing are
only some of the issues that are mainly driven by the quality of the
used software. A satisfying level of this quality in many cases is
very hard to achieve.

Experiences and methods from classical software development can only
be utilized to some degree. Moreover, the inherent challenges of the
respective new devices ask for novel solutions. The above-sketched
issues are worsened by the conditions that development underlines.
Typical particularities include the need for multi-platform
development, device fragmentation, context-sensitivity, low
computational power, little memory, energy conservation requirements,
and the heterogeneity of users. Therefore, new threads of research
are needed to tackle these issues and to pave the way for better
business producibility and an improved customer experience.

This minitrack extends the former Mobile App Development minitrack
(of HICSS-49 and HICSS-50) beyond the core app realm, which was
limited to apps for devices for smartphones and tablets. It keeps the
focus on software development but broadens the scope of applicable
hardware to reflect the increasing interconnectedness. The minitrack
thereby is devoted to the technological background of mobile
computing while keeping an eye on business value, user experience,
and domain-specific issues. Topics of interests include (but are not
limited to)

o	Case studies of development for mobile devices, wearables, and the
IoT
o	Enterprise usage and business models of software for mobile
devices, wearables, and the IoT
o	Development methods for mobile devices, wearables, and the IoT
o	Economic and/or social impact of mobile computing
o	Requirements engineering for apps
o	User interface (UI) design and user experience (UX) research for
mobile devices, wearables, and the IoT
o	Testing of mobile devices, wearables, and the IoT
o	Cross-platform development
o	Web technology in mobile devices, wearables, and the IoT
o	Security and privacy for mobile devices, wearables, and the IoT
o	Legal aspects of software for mobile devices, wearables, and the
IoT
o	Energy efficient computing on mobile devices
o	Sensor-usage in mobile devices, wearables, and the IoT

IMPORTANT DATES
01 April 2017 : Paper submission begins.
15 June 2017 : Submission of full manuscripts
17 August 2017: Acceptance notifications

For formatting instructions, see HICSS website.
(While LaTeX submissions are discouraged by HICSS, we have made good
experiences with them. Just be sure to comply with the proper IEEE
LaTeX template. It will look better than the papers produced with
Word, anyway.)

POSSIBLE PAPER EXTENSION
The Software Development for Mobile Devices, Wearables, and the
Internet-of-Things minitrack will be held for the first time, but it
follows the former Mobile App Development minitrack from HICSS 2016
and 2017. We are currently scrutinizing possibilities for providing
post-conference publication opportunities for revised and extended
papers, e.g. as part of a journal special issue.

Please consider to approach us with an abstract to check suitability
to the minitrack. In case of questions, please feel free to contact
us any time.
