Under the British Council’s Researcher Links scheme offered within the Newton Fund, Loughborough University, UK will be holding an international workshop on Developing an agenda for Fintech research in emerging economies. We are now inviting Early Career Researchers from the UK to apply to attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton Researcher Links programme. The workshop will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 31st October to 2nd November 2017. The Researcher Links application form
must be completed and sent to Ruth Cufflin (E-mail: R.Cufflin at lboro.ac.uk<mailto:R.Cufflin at lboro.ac.uk>) before the deadline of 20th August 2017.

The workshop is being led by Prof M. N. Ravishankar, School of Business & Economics, Loughborough University and will have contributions from leading UK researchers. The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for sharing research expertise and networking. The programme, ‘British Council Researcher Links’ provides opportunities for early career researchers from the UK and internationally to interact, learn from each other and explore opportunities for building long-lasting research collaborations. During the workshop early career researchers will have the opportunity to present their research in the form of an oral presentation and discuss their ideas with established researchers from the UK and Malaysia. There will be a focus on building up links for future collaborations and helping participants develop the research skills required to design and conduct impactful empirical research.

Themes and Objectives

Fintech applications are poised to trigger a digital disruption of the financial services sector and contribute significantly to equitable growth in emerging economies. Some popular examples of Fintech growth areas include peer-to-peer (P2P) lending (online platforms that connect borrowers and lenders bypassing traditional financial institutions) and mobile money (the creative use of mobile phone phones to access credit, remittances, insurance etc.). This workshop will explore the potential of Fintech innovations and applications to advance financial inclusion and support disadvantaged and marginalized communities. Through a series of interactive knowledge sharing activities and mentoring sessions, the workshop aims to:

• Raise awareness of the potential of Fintech applications for overcoming key financial inclusion challenges in the UK and Malaysia;

• Identify the processes through which the regulatory and institutional environments in emerging economies can be realigned to fully exploit the potentialities of Fintech;

• Facilitate professional development and research capacity building of early career researchers through opportunities to present their current work and the provision of supportive and constructive feedback;

• Develop concrete and credible plans for high-impact research on the role of digitally-enabled social innovations in achieving equitable growth;

• Establish new research links between the scholarly communities in UK and Malaysia;

• Identify and support the development of inter-disciplinary research links amongst the workshop participants;

• Develop participants’ ability to setup sustainable collaborative engagements with industry stakeholders, secure research funding and produce research outputs in the Fintech area.

The workshop will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 31st October, 1st and 2nd November 2017.

Eligibility Criteria
• Applications must be submitted using the Researcher Links application form
• Application must be submitted before the above deadline
• Participants must be Early Career Researchers: Early Career Researchers are defined as holding a PhD and having up to 10 years post-PhD research experience.
• Participants must have a research or academic position (a permanent post, research contract, or fellowship  etc)  at  a  recognised  research  institution in  the  UK.

Criteria for Selection of Participants

• Interest/experience of working in the area of digitally-enabled social innovations
• Relevance of the applicant’s research area to the workshop
• Motivation and contribution to the aims of the workshop
• Description of the long term impact expected through participation in the workshop

Selection Procedure:
The selection will be competitive. Participants will be selected in accordance with the eligibility and selection criteria set above.

Notification of results:
Applicants will be notified by email on 25.08.2017
