The Collaborative Social Systems Lab at the Network Science Institute at 
Northeastern University in Boston seeks to hire a post-doctoral fellow 
with a background in organizational behavior, communication, psychology, 
human-computer interaction, team science, or a related discipline. The 
post-doctoral fellow will work with Brooke Foucault Welles and Christoph 
Riedl on a funded research project studying the dynamics of 
collaboration in face-to-face and virtual teams, starting July 2019.

The post-doctoral fellow will be in charge of (a) developing theories of 
dynamic team-level processes in face-to-face groups with an emphasis on 
reducing decision-making bias and increasing inclusion to improve team 
performance (collective intelligence); (b) developing interventions in 
the form of adaptive intelligent cognitive agents that interact with the 
team to affect team processes, and (c) designing and executing virtual 
and face-to-face group experiments and working with existing datasets to 
explore how factors like group composition and communication enable 
collective intelligence to emerge in groups.

This work will combine the candidate’s interests with our prior work on 
dynamic teams research, including: studying human verbal and non-verbal 
dynamics in face-to-face group meetings using a smart meeting room; 
developing a suite of group experiment tasks on the Volunteer Science 
platform to study information sharing and communication, including 
virtual agents (bots) that can deliver interventions; and developing 
systems for optimal experimental design that allow us to efficiently 
test interventions, such as imposed network topologies.

An ideal candidate will have interests and skills blending social 
network or organizational behavior theory with strong quantitative and 
computational skills. The candidate must have a PhD in organizational 
behavior, economics, HCI, information systems, cognitive psychology, 
quantitative psychology, communication, computer science, or a related 
discipline. The post-doctoral fellow would be supervised by Christoph 
Riedl and Brooke Foucault Welles at the Network Science Institute (with 
an appointment at D’Amore-McKim School of Business) at Northeastern 
University in Boston, MA. The post-doc must start the position no later 
than July 1st 2019 and attend an interdisciplinary Summer Innovation 
Summit in the Boston area associated with the program funding the 
position (transportation and accomodation for the Summit is provided). 
The fellowship/position is for one year with strong intention to extend 
for a second year.
