Introduction

These days, the number of higher education institutions is increasing
considerably while having a competitive vision has become one of the
essential qualities of higher education institutions and authorities. This
competitive vision can be tracked in higher education institutions’ mission
and vision statements, strategy plans and documents elaborating on academic
staff recruitment. In addition to competitiveness, the collaboration
between higher education institutions and industry is another significant
issue that deserves attention. Consequently, higher education authorities
may need to track industrial developments taking place in real life and
seize cooperation opportunities with industry since these two concepts,
i.e., competitiveness and cooperation, seem to be highly intertwined. As
such, this special issue aims to include examples of scholarly work that
focus on competitive and innovative perspectives about the system and
management of higher education institutions.

Objective

Competitive strategies and higher education-industry collaboration policies
are playing a vital role in fostering the reputation and international
rankings of higher education institutions. The positive impact of these
policies may best be observed in economic and social outputs of many
countries such as the USA, Singapore, South Korea, EU countries such as
Belgium, Germany, France, and the Netherland. However, the number of
academic publications which specifically concentrate on the impact of these
policies on higher education institutions and authorities remains
relatively limited. This special issue targets at covering a wide range of
issues and topics, including but not limited to employment systems, quality
management systems and international ranking systems in higher education;
education and language policies in higher education; and business models
employed in technoparks. It is hoped that this issue will help higher
education institutions manage their manpower and become cognizant of the
factors that may exert a drastic impact on their success.

The target audience includes researchers, practitioners, undergraduate and
postgraduate students. Therefore, proposed chapters need to address both
