Here are the results of my query to the listserv regarding academic research on cloud computing. Thanks to all who responded.
Allan E. Alter, Research Fellow
Accenture Institute for High Performance, Boston, MA

PS -- I have published a short primer on cloud computing for a general management audience on the Accenture web site. It is not targeted to academics, IT management or IT professionals, and is not based on my own original research. It is available at: http://www.accenture.com/Global/Research_and_Insights/Institute-For-High-Performance/Six-Questions.htm
I will publish a survey-based study on cloud computing later this year.

Dear Mr. Alter,
I was just going through AISWorld emails sent during the holidays and found your mail on Cloud computing and SaaS research. Since I was planning to do some research in the SaaS area, I was going through various journal online databases to see what sort of research is there.
There is not a whole lot of IS research on either on SaaS.
Here are some research studies that appeared in the recent times:
A Transaction Cost Perspective of the "Software as a Service" Business Model. By: Susarla, Anjana; Barua, Anitesh; Whinston, Andrew B.. Journal of Management Information Systems, Fall2009, Vol. 26 Issue 2, p205-240
Campbell-Kelly, M. "Historical Reflections The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of Software as a Service," Communications of the ACM (52:5) 2009, pp 28-30.
Choudhary, V. "Comparison of Software Quality Under Perpetual Licensing and Software as a Service," Journal of Management Information Systems (24:2), Fall 2007, pp 141-165.
Apart from this, there are quite a bit of work done in the ASP area.
Hope this information is useful.
Regards,
George

I am planning on using AWS in the class I am currently teaching. The students will setup web-servers, and install a Business Process Management System which is web-accessible. In the follow-on course they will implement a process on the server.

Dear Allan,
Saw your post to AISworld. I certainly can't speak on behalf of my academic colleagues nor AIS but my personal view (being a bit self-critical) is that cloud computing has shall we say "floated by" without much notice. Most of us don't get credit for case studies unless it is the basis for theoretical research and in some sense we are just beginning to report research on social networking so myself included are behind.
I only started paying attention to cloud computing this semester when I convinced three seniors to compete in the qualifying round for CaseIT 2010 http://caseit.org It is an international case competition for undergraduates and apparently highly competitive. The topic for 2010 is cloud computing. I put together a reading list (student's notes refers to the list found on http://sites.google.com/site/hcinfosys/other-topics/cloud-computing) for the team and coached them on how to do a 12 slide presentation. Other than that the competition requires the coach/mentor to have no contact.
They received a case about a European VOIP PBX company for the qualifying round and in 3 weeks (in middle of our midterms) came up with a solution to revamp their business model. The solution relied upon use of cloud computing. And I am quite proud to say that despite competing against information system powerhouse universities in Europe and Asia they qualified for the 2010 CaseIT competition!!! The first team from the Middle East.
I probably don't have permission to share the case but I can share the students Powerpoint if you are interested.
And if I may ask, who in Accenture can I contact about getting a sponsorship for these students? The three of them (plus myself) are responsible for raising travel and lodging expenses. Unfortunately Beirut to Vancouver is an expensive route.
And to your original question - now that I know a little about cloud computing I see it as a rich area for research as the nature of information systems and the organizations that use them will change dramatically. I touch upon some aspects of these changes in my CAIS paper http://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/vol23/iss1/1/ that talks about operational issues for stakeholders of a Data Storage Grid for backing up medical images. I also anticipate that many of the solutions for electronic medical record and electronic prescribing for the small medical practices will be on the cloud - perhaps the only way to give one or two physician offices such a capability.

Dear Allan,
a colleague has forwarded your post on AISWorld Digest, Vol 2, Issue 18 to me.
I am a research associate and PhD student at TU München, together with 2 colleagues we are conducting research on cloud computing from a business perspective. We are currently investigating the value network of cloud computing.
Here you can find a list of our publications on that topic to get an overview of our work:
http://www.mendeley.com/collections/465331/Publications-Cloud-Computing/
Please note that all the English papers are accepted for publication, and will be published during 2010. As soon as they are published, I can send you a copy if you are interested.

Hi Allan –
I hope this finds you well. I don’t have specific references to point you to at the moment, but I have seen numerous pieces on the Cloud and its numerous incarnations, including a piece that tries to put a rigorous definition around the various XaaS components. I believe that was in CACM or IEEE Spectrum, and included definitions for SaaS, as well as PaaS (Platform) and IaaS (Infrastructure). While I likewise have not seen explicit commentary about strategy, but have seen research addressing business process issues, particularly around the technology-related elements – disaster recovery, business continuity, information security and due diligence, etc.
I’m certainly interested in knowing what you may find, and will do a bit more digging when I get to a connected location.
Best regards,
Paul Witman

Allen -- Saw your request on ISWORLD re: cloud computing.
Somewhat along the lines of what you've asked for, I have a "mini-case study" of sorts to share. Leveraging open source tools, I have been successfully using cloud computing (Amazon EC3) as part of my own research projects. I've written about the experience here:
http://community.mis.temple.edu/stevenljohnson/2009/11/18/statistical-analysis-via-cloud-computing/
I'm pleased with the results to date and have found it to be cost effective, too.

Allan, we completed a opinion paper recently just on this topic. A prior version is here<http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1413545>, [“Cloud Computing – The Business Perspective”] but the latest version is enclosed (the online file will get uploaded to this version very soon).
