Data plays a pivotal role in delivering effective, quality healthcare.
How can we address the challenges of data integrity?

Abstract deadline: December 30, 2021

Article deadline: January 31, 2022

Data has always been at the heart of healthcare and life sciences. Think
submission to the FDA for approval to market a new drug. Think the chart
at the bottom of your hospital bed, or the patient record at your
primary care physician's office. Think monitoring visit reports for
clinical trials, WebMD, the health app on your smartphone and your Apple
watch. I could go on and on.

In recent years, data has become increasingly pivotal to the industry.
Biopharma CEOs now describe their organizations as data centric,
governments are active in protecting (or not) individuals' data privacy
rights, court dockets include many cases involving data, and many
companies have been founded solely to aggregate and analyze
healthcare-related data and records. These examples barely scratch the
surface of data's full impact/importance in healthcare.

An upcoming issue of Cutter Business Technology Journal (soon to be
renamed Amplify ), with Guest Editor Ben van der Schaaf

https://www.cutter.com/experts/ben-van-der-schaaf

, will look at the multiple aspects and impacts of data in the broader
health care and life sciences sector.

Article ideas may include, but are not limited, to:

How can companies work within the necessary barriers created by data
privacy laws?

Electronic health records platforms have multiplied, and differ from
country to country. How do we make sense of and manage this data?

Social media is very rich in healthcare data, and also in noise and
misinformation. How should companies deal with this?

Who owns patient data, what does it include, and what is its potential
in delivering healthcare and developing new (precision) medicines?

Data lakes proliferate, though many are more like swamps than lakes.
What is the challenge of data fragmentation; what is the opportunity?

Wearables generate a vast amount of subject data in daily life, in
clinical trials, and in healthcare delivery settings. How do we make
sense of it all?

Who regulates what? The regulatory landscape for technology and data is
complex — many regulators have a piece of the pie, and every country has
their own regulators. For example, in the US alone, we must consider
Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In addition, Office for Civil
Rights (OCR), within the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS),
governs the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
and will also be involved.

We hear every day about data breaches and ransom attacks. How do they
factor into our general attitude towards data, technology, and security?
How do we keep our data secure?

As data volume increases, and is sourced more widely and less
controlled, how do we ensure data integrity – and the integrity of
everything that builds on it?

Data visualization: how do we make those vast amounts of data accessible
and understandable?

Where in the complex landscape of healthcare delivery and drug
development does AI/ML play a role, and how can we make sure we stay on
top of the many algorithms?

Real world data and real world evidence is closely linked to EHRs. What
role does real world evidence play in clinical development and
healthcare delivery?

Dealing with all that data requires people who know what they are doing.
There seems to be a general shortage of data scientists, data wranglers,
or other experts as many industries seek to bring those capabilities in
house. How do we handle that shortage when the data flow won't wait?

COVID-19 unleashed a flood of scientific publications, and there wasn't
a real shortage before that! How do we keep up with this influx of
scientific literature?
