The Fourth Practice-driven Research on Enterprise Transformation (PRET-4)

Organized as the Industrial Track of the CAiSE 2012 conference,
Gdansk, Poland, 25-26 June, 2012

http://www.pret-series.org/CAiSE2012

Submissions due: February 26, 2012

** Aims and objectives of PRET
Modern day enterprises are in a constant state of flux. New technologies,
new markets, globalisation, mergers, acquisitions, etcetera are among the
"usual suspects" which require enterprises to transform themselves to deal
with these challenges and new realities. Most information systems
practitioners will find themselves working in a context of enterprise
transformation. One could even go as far as to claim that a business
oriented perspective on information systems is really about enterprise
transformation, where enterprise transformation involves the use of methods
and techniques from enterprise engineering, enterprise modelling,
enterprise architecture, and information systems engineering. As a field of
study, enterprise transformation requires a close interaction between
practice and academia. What works and does not work requires validation in
real-life situations. Conversely, it is in industrial practice where
challenges can be found that may fuel and inspire researchers.

** Event Format
PRET is a highly interactive event. The conference will be organized at a
venue that stimulates discussion and open exchange of ideas and experiences.
In addition to highly interactive paper sessions the event will include a
number of parallel think-tank sessions focusing on various topics, aiming
for further development of issues and directions shared between practice
and academia.

** The PRET series of events
PRET events are set up as one day events that are embedded in larger
academic and/or industrial conferences. PRET-4 is a continuation of the
PRET tradition which started in 2009 where the first PRET event was
organized as the industrial track of the CAiSE 2009 conference. In 2012
there will actually be two other major conferences that will organise a
PRET event.

** Proceedings
As with previous PRET events, accepted papers will be published in
Springer's Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing (LNBIP)
series.

** Topics
In general, PRET events are open to papers discussing enterprise
transformation related topics, while clearly bridging a research and
practical (real-world) perspective. In design science terms, we are
interested in research papers with a strong focus on the relevance cycle,
as well as papers focussing in specific real-world case studies.
More specific topics would, for example, include:
- Methodologies and approaches for Enterprise Transformation, including
methodologies for Enterprise Engineering, IS engineering, Enterprise
  Architecture Management, et cetera.
- Modelling languages and analysis techniques needed for Enterprise
Transformation, including Enterprise Modelling, Business Process Modelling
and Enterprise Architecture Modelling, et cetera.
- Methodologies and approaches to set up/mature an organisation's
Enterprise Transformation capability, including Architecture Governance,
Architecture Function, Change Management, et cetera.

** Paper Types
Papers should reflect the mission of PRET, which is to bring together
academia and the industry regarding the indicated topics. Papers should
stimulate the discussion and the synergy be tween these two "worlds", with
the ultimate objective of improving the field of enterprise transformation.
Two classes of papers are invited:
1. Research papers, reporting on finished research activities
2. Case papers, reporting on past/ongoing real-life case studies.

For case papers, it is required for authors to apply the STARR template:
1. The Situation in which the case is positioned. This includes (but is not
limited to) the broader context of the case organization (e.g. market,
competition), the characteristics of the case organization (facts &
figures), its challenges and opportunities, important stakeholders, the
reason why the case project was initiated, the positioning of the project
in the Enterprise Transformation context, and the history of earlier
   attempts.
2. The Task that has been conducted. This includes (but is not limited to)
goals and objectives of the Enterprise Transformation project, its budget
and timelines, special requirements, the roles of the various stakeholders.
3. The Approach taken. This includes (but is not limited to) the method used,
the various steps in this method, the paradigm or underlying philosophy of
the approach/method, the work products and deliverables that were produced,
the way in which the project was planned and managed, the risk
management approach and the tools used.
4. The Results of the project. This includes (but is not limited to) the
actual benefits for the case organization and stakeholders, a cost/benefit
analysis and the extent to which the case organization was
   actually transformed.
5. A Reflection on the case. This includes (but is not limited to) a
discussion about the faced challenges, the way in which the existing
Enterprise Transformation Body of Knowledge aided dealing with these
challenges, the omissions and limitations you found in this BoK and
thoughts about how you propose to 'fix' omissions and limitations
