CONTENTS OF VOLUME 17, NUMBER 3, (July - September, 2014) OF THE JOURNAL OF
GLOBAL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT (JGITM)

SPECIAL ISSUE: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN INDIA AND THE INDIAN REGION
Guest Editor: Jaideep Ghosh

IT IN INDIA AND THE INDIAN REGION
Jaideep Ghosh, National Institute of Science, Technology and Development
Studies, India, jghosh20770 at gmail.com
Since the resurgence of growth in the globalization of IT products and
services in the late 1990s, the performance of the IT/ITES and BPO sectors
in India has indeed been remarkable. Nevertheless, over the past several
years, India's position as a leading, global IT player has been neither
fully steady nor sufficiently stable. IT in India and the Indian region has
a number of exciting stories to tell. This special issue of JGITM features
three articles, all particularly relevant to its theme: IT in India and the
Indian Region.

A TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION MODEL FOR BROADBAND INTERNET ADOPTION IN INDIA
Jordan Fletcher, The MITRE Corporation, jlfletcher at mitre.org
Shahram Sarkani, George Washington University, sarkani at gwu.edu
Thomas A. Mazzuchi, George Washington University, mazzu at gwu.edu
Since 1980, corporations have spent nearly 50% of their revenue on
technology, yet 50% of these new systems fail. The field of technology
acceptance modeling posits that user acceptance is a root cause of these
failures. Technology acceptance studies endeavor to determine the factors
that lead users to adopt or reject a technology, but existing models have
multiple weaknesses that impact their effectiveness and applicability. This
study used enterprise systems engineering principles to analyze and improve
existing technology acceptance models, and proposed a new model that could
be applied to disadvantaged user populations. The study analyzed IT survey
results from 338 firms across India and used the revised technology
acceptance model to identify factors that were correlated to broadband
internet use.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IMPACT AND ROLE OF FIRM AGE AND EXPORT ACTIVITY: AN
EMERGING ECONOMY CONTEXT
Gaurav Dixit, Sharda Group, India, gaurav.dixit at sharda.ac.in
Prabin Panigrahi, Indian Institute of Management Indore, India,
prabin.panigrahi at iimidr.ac.in
This study seeks to deepen the understanding of research in business value
of Information Technology (IT) by examining the role of contextual factors
such as firm age and export activity in IT impact following contingency
theory perspective. The study is set in India and provides generalization
in a new setting of emerging economy. An empirical study was conducted
using data from 320 firms between 2007 and 2010. The results indicate that
IT investments enable firms to reduce their operational costs without
contingencies related to firm age and export activity. However, the impact
of IT investment for improving profit is contingent on export levels such
that the impact is higher for high exports firms.

WHICH FACTORS INFLUENCE THE ADOPTION OF SOCIAL SOFTWARE? AN EXPLORATORY
STUDY OF INDIAN IT CONSULTANCY FIRMS
Alivelu Manga Mukkamala, IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark,
alivelu.mukkamala at gmail.com
Liana Razmerita, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, lr.ibc at cbs.dk
The rationale behind traditional knowledge management initiatives is to
create, capture, share, organize and use intangible assets such as
organizational knowledge. Recently, organizations are adopting new forms of
information and communication technologies such as social software to
encourage employees to create and share knowledge. This paper explores the
adoption of social software tools by Indian knowledge workers working for
IT consultancy firms. A mixed method approach has been applied, and drawing
on social dilemma theory and Hofstede’s cultural theory, this study
discusses the factors affecting the adoption of social software by
knowledge workers.
